I'm Gen X. Latchkey (literally) all the way. I'm like a honey badger. I can do anything myself. All day chef. So if an LLM can do a decent job, cool, I'll use it. If it can't do it, I'll find another way. Or I won't do it at all.

This probably sounds flippant but if I need determinism then I'll use a deterministic tool. If I'm using an LLM it's because I'm ok with it working. But I'm not lost if it doesn't work.

i will say that my personal experience with it is strongly biased by the fact that i'm dyslexic. and it seems to work with my wonky brain. explaining things in a way that i seem to grok better than I have with other educational styles.

so yes, i'm optimistic about it, and i enjoy it, but it's also frustrating when it screws up, and it does screw up. it'll get stuck in a rabbit hole. or it'll remember random stuff that's no longer relevant. and at those times I just ignore it.

and that's a lot of what i do, i don't let it drive (most of the time) but i do use it for ideas, alternatives, and yes, learning new stuff. so yeah, my relationship with it is different than with a search engine.

for example, a couple of days my beloved cordless drill of 30 years finally gave up the ghost. so I had a really long conversation with Claude about what to replace it with. and it was a collaboration, it would offer some comparisons and then i'd go and have a look.

really interesting points. and the prison complex story is wild. i've experienced bad google maps, but it never routed me through a prison complex. for me the difference between straight Google search and Claude (just as an example) is the ability to ask follow ups.

This is a fascinating conversation to have. It's super relevant. But I gotta tell yah, I'm taking on a lot more ambitious projects with a wider array of techniques and materials than I ever have before because I know I can just fire up Claude and say; why isn't this working?

Another example is sometimes videos leave stuff out, or assume a level of skill I haven't achieved. For example, I didn't know the chisel tip was the best thing to start with. I always went with the pointy one because, y'know, point... But turns out, chisel is much easier.

Where with AI it can say; "it should look like this", and when it doesn't I can say, "No, it's not glossy it's gray...". And it can say in the moment; "Oh, your iron is too cold." Blah blah blah.

Soldering is a great example of this. I've watched videos on it in the past, but at the moment where my soldering doesn't look like what's happening in the video then the video becomes worth less. (Not worthless, just worth less.)

I see where you are going, and I agree, I think it would be ideal if I wasn't using AI. That being said, I think the reason that it works for me is the same reason it works for a lot of folks; an unlimited ability to ask hyper-specific contextual questions in the moment.
