I lived there Back In The Day when a few South Austin folks would complain about Aqua Fest noise and they would be roundly mocked by their neighbors and told to chill TF out.

When the “payoff” is for “a novel approach” I don’t know that the academic system provides much incentive to do it again, but better.

As an ex-Texan who worked in higher ed in Houston — well off South Asian communities and business helped fund all kinds of higher ed initiatives with scholarships, endowments etc. in Texas. Doubling down on racism vs keeping your institutions afloat is some crazy business.

I love this as an example for how to end something that's sprawling, complex, and beloved. Thoughtful stewardship of the digital materials, and celebrating what this organization did with a sense of pride and accomplishment, without any shame of the "if it's not forever it's a failure" trap. 💖

Make stuff. Do your hobbies. Geek out with your weird friends. Practice arts and crafts. Every society that ever burned to the ground left behind only the handicrafts, and every society saved from the brink was saved only by arts. Do not give up the joy of creating.

Dr. Cottom is correct. I’m in my 50s and at no point was Wikipedia considered “slop” in higher ed. Admittedly I was at a place (U of Illinois) with a strong cs program and good library school. But Wikipedia was considered in context of the human community around it.

Occasional reminder that Muslims were among the 1st responders, among those killed, & among those sent to fight our forever wars. That there could be any kind of ~criticism~ of NYC's Muslim mayor attending Fri's ceremony is grossest bigotry & dehumanization. It's a disgrace that reflects on us all.
