“I believe in the immortality of the Theater, it is a most joyous place to hide, for all those who have secretly put their childhood in their pockets and run off and away with it, to play on to the end of their days.” ~ Max Reinhardt. His birthday.

In a strange way, this takes us back to the beginning of the movement - when each of these theaters were created supposedly to represent and serve their communities.

The challenges in the field are real, and without good leadership from umbrella organizations, service organizations, unions, etc. we are all on our own.

Broadway is another story. And you bet your ass I have feelings about it. Especially as the NFPs and P's are not only becoming more intertwined - they are becoming more dependent on each other. ASK ME ANYTHING. I'M USING MY PTO AND I AM CRANKY.

And, for the record, I am a cranky New Yorker who is sick of the hyperfixation on NYC when it comes to the not-for-profit, regional/resident theater movement. It means very little to those of us toiling in the provinces.

Julie Felise Dubiner @jfdubiner.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
Also. I'm cranky that any outgoing leader would be so fucking cavalier about everything falling apart and not owning their part in it.

But cry at me that people are mean to the old guard. Suck it up, Buttercup. You're getting to retire and people are still kissing your tushie and you've never been anything but IN CHARGE.

What's not different is that all the racism and misogyny and classism and ageism is still here. Talk about that, Marxist.

And then there are the boards that want new leaders to have accrued the social and political capital of the previous leaders who were there for 25+ YEARS. And who started in a completely different world than the one we've inherited.

I am a little cranky to be sure, but I am tired of old men telling me about my field. I know a lot of them are in charge. Were in charge. Are for some reason thinking the world needs them to take 2 years to no longer be in charge.

I think a lot about all the late night conversations I had with my friends when I was in my intern years and the early career years. About how awful everything was and how all these theaters treated us so badly and how we would do better when we were in charge. So, for those of us that got to be in charge - please remember those conversations. Do the things we said we’d do. Especially now that everything has fallen apart, there are no excuses.

I'll skip the part where a friend who was part of the playwriting cohort let me come shower in her housing so I didn't have to stink all day or ride the shuttle all day and how one morning a very famous playwright screamed at me for being in the playwrights' housing. That's a different metaphor.

Like all metaphors and all dramaturgy, it's imperfect. But it was really lovely to be back here.

We're going to swim together for a while and I'll give my advice. Then I'll watch as you swim on your own. You need to let me know when you're waving and when you're drowning. And if you're drowning, I can save you, but if you fight me we're both going under.

Every morning that week I met him and we would swim a circuit together and I would give notes and then I would sit on the beach while he kept swimming.

I was housed at Connecticut College and didn't have a car, so I relied on the shuttle bus. Took the 6 am to campus. Met the playwright at the beach. On one end is a bit of a cove.

Wouldn't talk to me in rehearsals, so I asked if we could talk outside rehearsal. He said he went swimming every morning before breakfast and I could talk to him then.
