I liked this show a good deal

And so KimiShinu makes the interesting (but appreciated!) decision to focus on its most interesting character, Ari, for its final episode. This episode is mostly about her dealing with the grief of Seiran no longer being there and, while this has been an ongoing character thread with her for a while, it really comes to a head here, complete with her imagining Seiran in their classroom and their bedroom, doing what she'd normally have done. There's a real sense of loss here.

This is such an absolutely stupid comparison, but it is genuinely where my mind went. For whatever reason, the specific framing of loss in, especially the earliest parts of this episode reminds me of nothing less than "Things Change," the original finale to the 2003 Teen Titans cartoon. Something about how both are about dealing with the permanent loss of someone you care about. Obviously the circumstances are extremely different, and there must be a better reference point, but it's where my mind went nonetheless.

And, well, it goes a lot farther than that ever did of course

There's a bit in here at the end, where Ari is talking to her upperclassman Esther, that just absolutely knocked the wind out of me. Ari and Esther's conversation makes up most of the episode's back half and, over all, it's just really fantastic stuff, but there's one specific thing Ari says where she commits to picking herself back up from the tragedy that she's had to deal with. She says, "I want to live as the person she fell in love with." 'She' of course being Seiran here, and, I dunno man, that just set off the waterworks.

It's a good encapsulation of this series' strengths honestly. It's not a big-ideas series with a strong political bent, it focuses very much on the small. The characters and their relationships to each other are the real focus. To pull out another completely stupid comparison it honestly reminds me a little of Eureka Seven? Which is another anime about finding love in wartime and what that actually means. E7 is I'd say more overtly political, and its tone is pretty different, but there's some shared DNA there I feel.

Anyway, enough with weird comparisons. I think this is just as good as all the really acclaimed stuff that's aired so far this year. It is so in a more subtle and indirect way, but when it hits you, by god it hits you.
