Lord Mar gave Garrick a wide berth and approached my other side on a white and brown yammok. The envoy gave me a bright smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Princess Riela, it is my pleasure to accompany you today. You’ve attracted quite the crowd.”

“Yes, it seems several interlopers invited themselves along on what was supposed to be a private outing,” I murmured pointedly as he edged closer.
Mar chuckled, but his expression remained tight. “Indeed. You are too tempting to resist.”

There was a subtle warning layered under his words, but I hardly needed Mar to tell me I was a target.

A deep pit filled with even more vines and flowers followed the inner curve of the rose wall, so even if a climber made it over the first wall, they’d still have to cross the pit, and the flowers at the bottom somehow looked hungry.

The drawbridge had no rails, and if I fell into the pit, odds were good I wouldn’t make it back out again. A shiver worked its way down my spine and raised the hair on my arms. If I crossed this bridge, I would be well and truly stuck.

“We can still leave,” Garrick murmured so quietly I barely caught the words.

I shook my head and straightened my spine. Hungry flowers or no, I wasn’t a coward.

With Havil stabilized, Torran’s gaze flickered over me before snagging on my legs. My bare legs. Or maybe it was my scars that interested him. My knee was the worst, but other scars marred my skin, mapping the horrors of war across the canvas of my body.

I might not mind nudity, but I felt strangely vulnerable with my scars on display under the bright lights of the medbay. I pulled on my pants with shaky hands.

I met Torran’s inscrutable gaze, relieved that I saw neither triumph nor pity in his eyes. “If you will look after him,” I said with a head tilt at Havil, “I will go check on the others.”

“No.”

“Garrick,” I growled, but my next words were lost as his eyes darkened. Did he feel the same pull I did when he said my name?

Manners forced me to bake cookies for my new neighbor, but when I knocked on his door, no one answered. I left the plate on his porch and silently hoped the neighborhood raccoons got to it first.

The plate appeared on my porch the next day clean and stacked with lemon cupcakes. They were ridiculously delicious.

Time to bust out the big guns. I made apple turnovers with my grandmother’s secret recipe and left half on his porch without bothering to knock. If the cupcakes were any indication, we were engaging in stealth warfare.

If you use Scrivener, I highly recommend the Snapshots feature. It’s like a changelog for your writing. I have my projects set up to take a snapshot on manual save, and I usually take a named snapshot of the whole project before diving into edits. Then you can then compare versions!

Time lost all meaning. The glowing dress rotated through its colors in an endless loop. My right calf ached, then burned, then blazed with searing pain. I shifted minutely, trying to find a position—any position—that helped. There was no relief.

Ian would be in the captain’s suite upstairs, which meant I wouldn’t be tempted to find out how he looked without a shirt. He might be frustrating and infuriating, but damn if he didn’t cut a fine figure.

And desire could be a useful weapon, but one best wielded carefully.

I went through my bedtime routine, then sat cross-legged on the bed in my makeshift sleepwear. Ian hadn’t grabbed any loungewear, so I’d scrounged up an oversized shirt from the wardrobe that at least covered my underwear.

A scan for trackers and bugs in the room came back clean. Ian hadn’t picked this room because he’d bugged it. Huh.

“What are you doing? We’re on a ladder!”

The silver in his eyes glowed brighter with his wicked grin. “I bet we could make it work.” He pressed me against the stone at my back, then ran a hand up my leg, tugging it higher and nestling more firmly between my thighs.

I instinctively tilted my hips up, seeking friction, then froze. If he had a hand on me, then he didn’t have that hand on the ladder. I tightened my grip as terror slammed through me.

Garrick grunted, then blessedly put his hand back on the wall before he brushed his lips over my temple. “Shh,” he soothed. “I would never risk you, Riela. We’re perfectly safe.”

For reference, this is my current (eight-year-old) author photo. My hair, my poor hair. 😂 My love of black shirts remains undiminished, though!

I’m thinking about updating my author photo to this photo I took while taking passport photos. Thoughts? Is the white background too boring?

When I set the lev cycle down, he didn’t move. “Are you okay?” I mentally asked.

“Give me a second,” he said. “I don’t know how you did that.”

I chuckled quietly. “Ravine racing was good money, if you could do it.”

Nilo let go of me and swung off the vehicle. “Let me guess,” he said, his mental voice dry, “you excelled at it.”

I grinned at him. “Of course. Bravery and stupidity are two sides of the same coin, after all, and when I was young, I had both in ample supply.”
