ok first of all, I am trying to make this as short as possible while hitting the main beats. I am leaving so much out actually. This is all based on me lurking on twitter. I don’t post over there but I do still lurk. I’m weak I’m sorry!

But the star/villain of this story is opal apparition, a heated rivalry fic author who wrote multiple > 100k fics in the span of a around six months. The most popular was wolfbird, which was never finished due to the events I am about to describe.

I never read opal’s works. I first heard of her when she hid her fics in response to some bad fan behavior. Some of the usual stuff was going on, like demanding updates and leaving bad comments. But the main concern of authors at the time was “ai witch hunting.”

Multiple authors were facing ai accusations, some more founded than others. An article had been published recently noting that claude tends to reuse names and phrases, so using these words was often sited as evidence.

Most people denied the claims, and some deleted their accounts due to the “harassment.” The general consensus was that ai witchhunting is bad. Fanfic sounds like ai because ai scrapped fanfic. You can never really PROVE it unless someone leaves a prompt. Many writers were worried they would be falsely accused (couldn’t be me!). I guess we should all just give up and let the robots win, let the tag be overtaken by slop.

So opal hid her fics, and many people cried that their favorite fic was gone and wouldn’t be finished. Many other authors hid fics in solidarity. People were tweeting IStandWithOpal. But the weird thing was, Opal was not actually accused of ai, beyond some vague posts. What was she so afraid of hmmm.

Eventually the whole thing blows over, everyone unhides their fics, Opal starts posting again. But more and more people start questioning her writing, and then she DOES get accused of ai, with people pointing out the marcus chens and the 47s and the architecture of ____ etc. She denies it and starts secretly editing out the ai-isms. People notice her doing this.

Then a group of fans publishes the google doc “Fandom has a generative ai problem.” They find out that if you copy and paste directly from claude into the ao3 text editor, it leaves a fragment of code behind, and they could search for this to prove an author has used ai. This code ONLY shows up if you paste directly into ao3 (if you paste from claude to google docs, it won’t be there), so it won’t catch all or most ai usage, but there are no false positives.

The doc had a list of MANY heated rivalry fics and a few from other fandoms for good measure. Opal is on there, with two instances of the code in her fic nutcracker. Opal goes radio silent (publicly at least).

For many people, this proved the witchhunters write, and they surmised that she used ai not only for nutcracker but for all her other fics with the ai-isms. But some people still #StoodWIth Opal. They either don’t care about ai, or said maybe it was just used for editing, or maybe it was only those two sentences. Also they LOVED wolfbird and they’re so sad they’ll never read the end of it, all because of those nasty witchhunters. how dare they. I also cannot overstate how popular opal was. Like hundreds of thousands of hits on her fics. Everybody loves slop.

A few days? weeks? later, tulipathy posts a thread about her experience with opal on bluesky. Tulip was frustrated by how people were downplaying Opal’s ai use. Tulip was in a writing discord with Opal. They knew each other from the dragon age fandom. Tulip revealed that Opal had a book deal for wolfbird (now canceled), and that in addition to writing hundreds of thousands of fanfic for ao3, she was also working on preparing wolfbird for publishing, mainly cutting wordcount. Tulip was helping her with this, doing a lot of line editing to help her cut the story down. Tulip felt betrayed that she was asked to edit ai work. She noticed a decline in quality in Opal’s work, but thought it was just due to the stress of having to produce the work so quickly. Opal also privately admitted her ai use to Tulip and apologized. Tulip posted screenshots of their discord conversations as proof.

EVEN AFTER THIS, Opal still has fans. So Tulip and some other people from the writing discord start investigating her fics and find that she plagiarized at least two of them (and likely more). For one of them, she credited the original fic as “inspiration” but lifts full story beats and lifts unique phrases. Also when you look at the side by sides, she makes everything bloated and worse. It’s truly amazing. No wonder her publisher wanted her to cut word count. They also throw in things like Opal saying she “won’t read cassandra clare” due to plagiarism. The audacity. I’ll link the doc. I love them and I love all the ai witchhunters, they are braver than the troops.
