He did it! Rayan got his paper accepted in time for his early decision application to Yale! 🎉 Honestly, insisting that kids have a paper PUBLISHED before they apply to be an UNDERGRAD is just outrageous... Hopefully someone good takes him on from here! preprints.jmir.org/preprint/108...

My word. An R01 proposal fully signed, sealed, and delivered for university submission before October 1. (for an October 5 submission to NIH) I've never done that before ever! @melaniebozzay.bsky.social is a rockstar! (though I occasionally miss the old days of the last-minute dash to FedEx...)

I'm helping mentor junior faculty through the grant writing process, as part of an official program this year. Two things: First, I have to stop referring to assistant professors as "the kids". 🤣 Second, you really do learn stuff by doing it for 30 years. 👩‍🦳

I don't like days full of meetings--like so many, I look back fondly on the days where I was just analyzing data and writing papers/grants -- but I must say, when it's one good progress update after another, with results coming thick and fast--that's a good day. 😁

We did our summer progress review/fall goals setting at lab meeting on Friday. I love doing that!! Everyone is chugging along, checking off what they said they would do and setting, if I may say so, mighty ambitious plans for the fall. Here we go! 🧠

Kids these days. They don't believe we ever localized fMRI results by comparing an individual brain to published *books* of labeled brains in different orientations, poring over every bend of every sulcus. Mind you, I knew my own brain well enough to pick it out of a line up, in those days. 😁

I feel deranged trying to submit grants to NIH, given the funding limitations, delays, recalls, etc. We've got folks here whose grants were recommended for funding, but no sign of $$ from NIH even after 6 months. What was that about doing the same thing but expecting a different outcome... 😉

I do get very happy when members of the lab find new datasets they'd like to work on, and initiate the process for getting them. (I'm training 'em up right. 😁) But whenever there's a chance to help *collect* data, they are also always first in line to volunteer. Best of both worlds!

Italian mathematician Maria Gaetana Agnesi was born #OTD in 1718. She wrote the first book discussing both differential & integral calculus and was the first woman appointed as a mathematics professor at a university (University of Bologna). #WomenInSTEM #mathematics
Black-and-white historical engraving portrait of Maria Gaetana Agnesi (1718–1799), the pioneering Italian mathematician and philosopher. She is depicted in bust view facing forward, with elaborately curled 18th-century hair styled high on her head and a long braid over one shoulder. She wears a formal gown with a wide fur-trimmed collar and puffed sleeves, conveying elegance and intellectual dignity against a soft, shaded background.Title page of Volume I of "Instituzioni analitiche ad uso della gioventù italiana" by D.na Maria Gaetana Agnesi, published in Milan in 1748. The ornate text in Italian announces the work by the Milanese member of the Academy of Sciences of the Institute of Bologna. Below the title is an engraved illustration of a classical architectural structure, possibly a temple or tower, flanked by trees in a landscape setting, with publication details at the bottom: "IN MILANO, MDCCXLVIII.
