Incredible that they somehow make it sexy to have ordered fish on a train.

Taipei Taoyuan —well designed, airy, plenty of comfy seating and possessed of several pretty decent xiaolongbao places — would be a 10/10 airport were it not congenitally infested with travelator-standers. Or were I simply permitted to taze them.

Oi to all you folks queue-jumping the Yura Borisov train because of ARTIFICIAL. Get behind me, I've been on line since 2021 when he was called Yuriy, had 5 films premiere in one year and was differently great in all of them.

Why we're expected to trust that dude with the responsibility of ensuring the future of Hollywood when the good Lord didn't even see fit to trust him with the responsibility of eyebrows, I'll never know.

I am at the "schedule 25 mins of sitting cross legged on the Haeundae boardwalk to stare at the sea" stage of my fall festival tour, thanks for asking.

So I get on the L train at 14th at 2am after a very nice party in Manhattan. Train is clean, bright, plenty of people but still plenty of space. There's a young woman stretched out fast asleep on one of the rows of seats. I think hey, good for her, and sit down nearby.

No one will ever convince me that New York is anything but the best city on earth but America, you are also very fucked up.
NYC subway ad for some weird US ambulance-chasing lawyer that reads: Nothing says "I'm sorry" like a six-figure settlement.

As a smoker, and a Nirvana fan, and of the exact vintage to still regard both those things as deeply cool, I enormously approve of Pat Smear lighting up onstage at the VMAs. I really hope it was because he was told he couldn't smoke backstage, so was like, ok then...

So was the fictional lead of McDonagh's WILD HORSE NINE partly inspired by the real-life father of his THREE BILLBOARDS star?

I have some debilitating unrecognised condition where my otherwise relatively limber brain goes into full-on paralysis mode whenever it is forced to contemplate economics at scale, but man, even I know this is not remotely the way any of this shit works.

Heard from a friend that the performative laughter right from the start of the TIFF press screening of POSSIBLE LOVE drove him so insane that he had to leave and I just checked letterboxd and yep. (These are all different people). I'm a pretty peaceable dude but, sorry, no, immediate death penalty.

Very sad to hear of the death of Patricio Guzmán, one of my all-time documentary heroes. The middle entry of his Chile Trilogy, THE PEARL BUTTON, remains one of my favourite docs ever. Just exemplary in its essayistic intimacy, political acuity and novelistic sprawl. theplaylist.net/berlin-revie...

So weird that we can be sure Trump did not, in fact, use AI for this. His comms might be the last place safe from AI. They're unfakeably worse than any LLM could manage, in spades.

If I were Zendaya I would get one of these in every colour and wear only this look every day for the rest of my life which is a pretty neat encapsulation of why (among other reasons) I am not Zendaya.

On Saturday in Venice, having a quick lunch, I realised Lee Chang-dong was one table over. Not wanting to make him uncomfortable, I tried not to stare, but I'm sure I radiated starstruckness. I think I glimpsed him visibly wondering why the blue-haired idiot opposite kept smiling into her noodles.

Anyway, whatever, I'm over it. As a matter of direst urgency, everybody owes it to the world to watch NAZA, and as a matter of long-lasting, spirit-nourishing cinema, everybody owes it to themselves to watch POSSIBLE LOVE.

Good to know that in my fantasy (but still obviously rule-abiding) awards lineup I can now officially hand the Golden Lion to POSSIBLE LOVE *and* Best Actress to Jeon Do-yeon. Congratulations to both!

In advance of tonight's awards, for which my only (very uncontroversial) opinion is that POSSIBLE LOVE and NAZA must feature, my Sight & Sound review of another potential contender, WILD HORSE NINE, has just gone live.

Things I was frightened of as a child: 1. Sucking a lollipop, tripping and having the stick rupture my throat. 2. Fish. 3. Isidora Duncaning myself whenever wearing a scarf and/or riding a bike. 4. That I might have murdered somebody and made myself forget it. 5. Leprosy.

Surely the moment you accuse a friend of lying because they hold an opinion contrary to yours is the moment that friendship ends. (In, fact it's the moment you reveal that you were never much of a friend to them in the first place. It is the profoundest disrespect.) And you did that, not them.

If you don't think too much about why it is that "not owning a Bugatti" is the thing that reveals these capri-panted dipshits to be the most pathetic losers alive — as opposed to, you know, all the rape — this is v enjoyable to witness.
