I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

National Science Foundation Diverted $1.4 Billion in Science Funds Mandated by Congress (Gift Article)
The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

I see a lot of students wanting to pay to participate in these programs (whether its sharks, turtles, etc.) and I'm immediately skeptical but would love to learn more - what do we look for to make sure they have followed the correct procedures (e.g., IACUC equivalent)?

I'd love to hear your thoughts about private or non-profit institutions who bring students in for training courses (where students pay $$$ to "tag sharks") and if there are any state-wide ethics requirements? Are organizations required to have their own ethics review process?

I’ve seen news articles about new whole genomes of charismatic species and phylogenetic studies, all based on preprints. NYTimes has published two articles on the Greenland shark genome, each claiming it was the first.

I’m seeing more and more preprints turn into major news articles, like this today in the NYTimes. Is press-release from preprint the new norm? I’m all about preprints but would never think of writing a press release before peer review. Am I out of touch? www.nytimes.com/2026/06/04/s...

The current administration does not support co-produced research, nor do they actually care about the safety of American people. Am I surprised? No. Will I be calling and emailing Senator Dan Sullivan's office tomorrow? Absolutely.

Literally no scope of our proposal changed from when it was funded in 2024. From the start we faced barrier after barrier. First was a list of banned words like "Indigenous science" and a threat that if we used them we could bring down the whole center, and that they would monitor our social media.

Our DHS grant was terminated last week. This was awarded via the University of Alaska Anchorage's Arctic Domain Awareness Center, which was dissolved by the Trump administration last year and then brought back by Senator Dan Sullivan. We were barely allowed to spend any of the funds. The reason?
