I will never understand kids and young adults making jokes about 9/11. I wasn’t alive during WWII, but I have certainly never made a joke about it. Listening to people’s terrified calls from the towers and planes should be required in school if they’re going to be THAT heartless about it otherwise.

He and I are having so much fun collecting together and that alone makes me happier than anything. I love that we have something fun to share like that and I hope he always remembers it. But I’ve also met a wonderful group of people through the hobby so far and it’s brought me a lot of joy, too.

Becoming a part of the Pokémon community has been surprisingly amazing. The hobby is marked by insane scalping and investibros, but individuals have been SO welcoming, generous, and friendly. It feels really good to see people be this kind to one another, especially to kids like my little guy. 💜

I got my 256GB LCD Steam Deck last fall before things got wacky, and between getting it on sale and using some class action cash I got toward it, I paid under $300 out of pocket. That was one hell of a deal, and now an absolute steal. $950 is ridiculous even for the best model of ANY PC handheld.

Reading that NYT article also just rubs me wrong. Some of the quotes have an undercurrent of assumption that kids are stupid and can’t do that mental stretching so let’s update books to make it so they don’t have to. That makes me want to flip tables as a parent. Self-fulfilling prophecy much?!

It’s funny, because he and I were talking last night while I made dinner about a word he had read in something, and it made me think about how he learns words/contextual use from older books more/differently. I did the same thing with older books versus things “of the time” for me as a kid.

Obviously a good story is a good story, and a good author will make sure that what is meaningful stays behind. But part of my mom side is against it because I want my kid to have to stretch his understanding and comprehension more than that.

Authors are the authorities of their own work for sure. If they want to update for whatever reason, they can. I don’t agree with it being needed in this case, but I agree that they should be able to do it regardless.

Like, on one hand I get it. Getting kids to read and stay engaged is key! But there is something I can’t quite put a finger on to explain about how my son interacts with older media versus things that are in the “now” context…but it is different in a good way.

Today I found the perfect shop for building up my collection of cute lil guys…tons of boxes of bulk Pokémon, sorted by expansions, right by tables to sit at and sort through. Right near my house. 25 cents each. Makes me feel like a kid. 💜

Stupid Bluesky posts out of order. Anyway, overall it is a really awesome little gadget that can be what you make of it. It led to me jailbreaking my Kindle to install Koreader, which syncs progress to the X4 and an app on my phone. Perfect ecosystem right now for me!

Considerations: it is epub only and needs DRM-free files, so you’re locked to using the few stores that carry them. No backlight (I ise a little reading light). It does require tinkering (a pro for me!) to optimize it. No Libby integration. Kind of fussy nav with buttons only but I like that?
