As we approach the 250th, @jessewegman.bsky.social gives us "The Lost Founder" about James Wilson, a pivotal yet forgotten architect of our republic. "I hope Wegman’s wonderfully readable book gets a wide audience," writes George Thomas in this rave review. washingtonmonthly.com/2026/06/23/t...

We are devastated by the sudden loss of Gordon Wood. Known to many as one of the foremost scholars on the American Revolution, Gordon was also a teacher of generations of students and other historians who, like him, help us better understand who we are as a country and a people.

Today in the NY Times, I argue for Congress to impose 18-year term limits on the justices. The quick version: When Clarence Thomas took his seat, Americans still made calls from payphones and corrected typos with Wite-out. No one should hold so much power for so long. www.nytimes.com/2026/05/19/o...

Congress has to do it. The states have to do it. Why shouldn’t the Supreme Court? Supermajority requirements are rare, but they can be valuable in ensuring consensus before making the most significant decisions — like, say, overturning an act of Congress. majorquestions.substack.com/p/why-54

Why 5–4?
The Supreme Court should have to work harder if it wants to overturn an act of Congress.

some wisdom from james wilson, framer. "The truth is that, in our governments, the supreme, absolute, and uncontrollable power remains in the people."

This is shameful. Every American should be outraged--and saddened--at the devastation to the Voting Rights Act, to fair representation, to protections against race discrimination, to our democracy, to our history, to our country. Shame on the Roberts Court.

There are some SCOTUS rulings I can’t get over. E.g., Rucho v. Common Cause (2019), which 1) was an abdication of the Court's primary role, and 2) gave us one of the 21st century's great dissents. If you read one thing, read that. And my latest piece. majorquestions.substack.com/p/a-tale-of-...

A Tale of Two Courts: Rucho v. Baker
Our modern gerrymandering nightmare is the fault of the Roberts Court, which lacked the guts to do its most important job.
