It's hard to describe what that feels like to know that. That I was just a few years away from staring down an early death while my limbs failed me. And yet, I still have to manage the weight of knowing I was almost misdiagnosed. That my optic neuritis lasted four days before doctors told me to seek treatment. That it took two more years and a full-body flare-up, where I was numb from my toes to my chest for two weeks, for the neurologists to order the proper workup testing that earned my diagnosis. There are a lot of what-ifs in everyone's chronic illness story. I could maybe have retained more of my eyesight. I could have been on
preventative medication before the full-body relapse. Every relapse is another moment of permanent scarring that ticks away at the healthy tissue in your neurological system.

Most people's multiple sclerosis diagnosis is categorized as relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. That means you alternate between normal states and flare-ups for years, until the eventual damage moves you to secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, where the body is in a constant state of degeneration. Secondary progressive multiple sclerosis usually leads to early death, and for many years, it was seen as an eventuality for anyone with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. Drug treatments were designed to delay this disease progression as much as possible, extending many people's lives as close to a normal lifespan as possible, even if the disease further disabled them.
In the five years since I started taking ofatumamab, I have not had a relapse. If I stay on this medication, I may never have another.

That doesn't mean I feel well all the time. It's actually the opposite: I feel mildly unwell all of the time. When my dog blew out a disk in his back and needed spinal fusion surgery, I was despondent. Before his injury, he was a wild and athletic little furball, sprinting up and down the stairs fearlessly every time I threatened to take him on a walk. What would his life be like as a disabled little thing? "Dogs are great at adapting," my friend the vet said. "He'll be fine." My friend was right. As soon as he healed, Gordie's little wobbly legs wanted to go for long walks, even if he looked a little drunk.
I suppose what I'm trying to say is that humans are good at adapting, too, to a degree. You reset your new normal and take it day by day from there.

I don't always talk about having multiple sclerosis because, if I'm being honest, I don't always remember | do. That's a product both of the type of chronic illness I have as well as the severity to which I've experienced its effects. When I wake up in the morning, my first thought is to make coffee. That progresses to sorting out how I want to spend the early morning, whether it's writing or reading or something else, and then I move on to the day. I suppose I could leave a Post-it note on the bathroom mirror that says you have multiple sclerosis as a reminder each day while I down my morning pills with a glass of water.

In the grander scheme of things, Civil War belongs to the “Shit Happens” Cinematic Universe. On paper, there’s a premise—what if a civil war broke out?—and on screen, the filmmaker rarely gets past the premise into an actual narrative. Things happen on screen, we’re not really sure why, we don’t know what it’s supposed to mean, and the filmmaker doens’t seem to really understand either. The movies are shot beautifully, capture images and scenes that play for big emotions, but ultimately don’t have a perspective that leaves you leaving the theater having felt anything true. These are the “pure vibes” movies that beg audiences to ascribe meaning to the images they saw on screen.
These movies, in the “Shit Happens” Cinematic Universe, often end at the moment that should be their beginning. The most interesting idea in Civil War isn’t “How do you get to a President before he’s executed,” it’s “Well, the president’s dead. Now what.” The movie spends nearly two hours establishing its premise, but it never fully develops a narrative. Getting to the White House is the premise; figuring out what wartime journalists do after the execution is the narrative. By cutting off the movie right as it opens up, Garland is telling the audience, “Well, you figure it out.” Without an actual narrative to connect with, though, most of the figuring out is entirely invented for each viewer.

In his 1970 essay What Is to Be Done?, Godard lays out two fundamentals:
1. We must make political films.
2. We must make films politically.
A political manifesto, the essay is laid out into numbered points, with the crux of What Is to Be Done? is highlighted in points 10 and 11:
10. To carry out 1 is to remain a being of the bourgeois class.
11. To carry out 2 is to take up a proletarian class position.
The framing for Godard is simple, but the piece captures a snapshot of a previous conception of the world. Rife with Maoist doctrine, What Is to Be Done? suggests a world that is still susceptible to revolution. It imagines that the gulf between the Marx-defined bourgeoisie and proletariat would steadily increase until the pressure becomes intolerable. It does not, however, predict a world in which the material signifiers of wealth (cars, computers, smartphones) become attainable enough for the average worker that the borders of the middle class blur beyond recognition. That is to say: who needs revolution when there’s food on the table and Godard films streaming at home?

if you talk with anyone about why they’re on Twitter, it’s the “action” part. they’re already addicted to the algorithm feeding them discourse and they want to engage in discourse and get riled up by discourse and they think that’s what social media is. bleak and dire. what a sad life
But the bigger problem is that there's little action on Bluesky or, especially, Mastodon. There's a lot of activity on Threads, but little action. There is action on X. I've said for years that Mastodon is my favorite of the bunch and in a way it still is, but really that's because when I go there I don't have to be diligent to avoid wasting time. I avoid wasting time on Mastodon because there's so little of interest to see. That's a feature - for me
- but it certainly isn't what most people are looking for in a Twitter-like posting platform.
They want action. The action is on X.

If I go to you ten years ago and say "Imagine a robot that can write books, that can draw things that have never existed, that can talk exactly like a human, that can reason through complex problems. Does this pose hard questions about our own unique nature?"
99% of you say "Yes, of course" 1/3

I think the evidence is that for thousands of years we pointed to things like our ability to reason, to communicate, to create and demonstrate creativity, to recognize feelings in others and respond to them, as evidence of our own consciousness, and suddenly machines are doing all of that

Searing and roasting a chicken breast is easy. Medium to medium-high heat, render the skin until it fries in its own fat, toss in some butter, garlic cloves, and herbs, slide into a pre-heated oven. Boom. The pan sauce, however, is something that eludes me. Building a pan sauce requires some experience-there are plenty of recipes out there, but what you need is the experience of deglazing with wine, watching it reduce, reducing your stock just right, and finishing with the right amount of butter. Most people expect a thick glaze from a pan sauce; most pan sauces are thin and a bit watery. It takes a bit of effort (and more cold butter than you'd expect to emulsify everything to the degree you might like, and the only way to sort that out is through practice.
