Day 19 of #EndangeredLangChallange Today was all about toponyms and what we can learn about the language through the etymology of place names. I’ve always liked Zocca (1337), from zòca-> Lat soccus, meaning wood log/trunk. More specifically for Zocca, it was chestnut wood.

Sneak-peak at data from the vitality survey on Gallo-Italian (Romance, endangered) with @jess-hampton.bsky.social and Simone De Cia. There is a clear decline in use of Gallo-Italian (GI) while Italian (IT) takes over through the generations.
