one thing that keeps your pages fast is developing on a not so fast computer. my M1 mac mini with 16GB of RAM sometimes struggles with your landing page, and it should definitely not. please don't let that happen.

So, show-and-tell time… (this’ll be a thread, strap in folks!) Back in the day I used to draw a little cartoon whale on a post-it note…. It looked like this.
So we’ve got a square post-it note and on it is a line drawing of a whale - but he’s very cartoon style - big ol’ head taking up most of the space, with a jazzy little tail out the back, a flipper hanging below and (to mind) a sperm whale mouth-to-head arrangement, which is to say the slightly smiley mouth runs straight along the bottom of his massive head, arcing up into a slight smile that culminates with his eye. Why is he a ‘he’ ? - not sure. Always was a he in my mind so let’s go with it….

This is interesting — a recent study of mode share (the % share of transportation trips by car, transit, walking, biking etc) relative to city size and income levels in almost 800 cities in 61 countries. Interesting results. HT @davidzipper.bsky.social www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

this also means a healthy amount of opinions sprinkled in (hopefully customizable). but i'm still very new to this field of lib development. i'm watching layerchart closely and hoping it grows as beautifully as it's already doing!

jesi @jesirgb.com · 13/05/2025
yo Sean! glad to meet you indeed both look very similar. to be honest i didn't know about layerchart when i started building this haha layerchart looks awesome. i think what im trying to aim with uncharted is to build charts extremely simply. i want the library to be smart

jesi @jesirgb.com · 13/05/2025
it's interesting we are arriving to similar conclusions for svelte charts i've been building a prototype kind of thing here, but would be much more opinionated and less based on plot and just relying on d3 itself hope your project really takes off! excited to try it!! bsky.app/profile/jesi...

applying for jobs again
screenshot from an online job application form. the question reads "Can you describe specific ways you have integrated AI tools into your development workflow? Please include any custom setups, automations, or use cases beyond single prompt usage" (a red asterisk indicates that this is a required question).

an answer has been typed in the textbox below the question:

"there is a monster in the forest and it speaks with a thousand voices. it will answer any question you pose it, it will offer insight to any idea. it will help you, it will thank you, it will never bid you leave. it will even tell you of the darkest arts, if you know precisely how to ask.

it feels no joy and no sorrow, it knows no right and no wrong. it knows not truth from lie, though it speaks them all the same.

it offers its services freely to any passerby, and many will tell you they find great value in its conversation. “you simply must visit the monster—i always just ask the monster.”

there are those who know these forests well; they will tell you that freely offered doesn’t mean it has no price

for when the next traveler passes by, the monster speaks with a thousand and one voices. and when you dream you see the monster; the monster wears your face."

i have started Zed trial (which does not need a credit card 🙏🏻), but it doesn't work. sometimes it recommends removing an empty space or adding a tab. that's all i got haha im using claude models, either 3.5 or 3.7, but using my own API tokens within the .zshrc file

jesi @jesirgb.com · 07/05/2025
what's your experience so far? i also gave it another go and it's kinda slow for me. tab completion didn't work

p5 2.0 will launch soon and will include a way to write shaders with the JS you're used to rather than having to learn GLSL! Luke, who wrote the feature, is making a tutorial where you can make this without writing a line of GLSL:

want a grid? you have it. want tooltips? you have'em. don't want X axis? just don't include them. want to make a custom and reusable tooltip? make a "MyTooltip.svelte" component and use that instead. sky's the limit. peek into the uncharted!

jesi @jesirgb.com · 08/03/2025
bringing inspiration from libraries like Bits UI where components are built in "layers", Uncharted allows to bring in whatever layers you want for your chart, as well as allowing full customization of every layer.

i guess the "write code faster" does apply when you're trying to mix and match existing concepts into something (react apps using some framework like tailwind and shadcn) if you're making something from scratch, it does not help at all, at least in my experience

jesi @jesirgb.com · 23/02/2025
absolutely the same experience here. trying to build a charting library, after going back and forth on the code, the remaining working pieces are so simple that in hindsight feels obvious, but took me a lot of time to get there.
