I was curious enough that I went and looked at the Dispatch archives through the library. In 1974, girls started asking if they could be in the band. In 1975, they tried out having an all boys band and an all girls band. By 1976, they decided “nah, let’s make it co-ed.”
March 22, 1974 | Columbus Dispatch (published as Columbus Evening Dispatch | Columbus, Ohio 1 Page 30
Disharmony developed among Ohio Expositions Commission members Thursday over whether, to be in tune with the times, the Ohio State Fair should have an all-girls' band or the present all-boys band should accept girls.
The question was raised in a letter from two Dublin High School students, Brenda and Julia Russell, who want an All-Ohio Girls' Band.

COMMISSIONER JOHN F. Evans of Mechanicsburg said that despite being the father of two daughters he wants to keep the present
300-member All-Ohio Boys' Band free of females, on both "visual and musical" grounds.

Commissioner J. Ronald Castell wants both boys and girls making band music together.
Expenses of providing separate housing for boy and girl band members was seen as a major problem.Band Lover Likes Unique Male Group
To the Editor
I think an appreciative round of applause should be given to the director of the All Ohio State Fair Boys' Band, his assistants and the boys themselves

THERE IS one dark cloud over the horizon Rumors are that next year - 1975 - girls might be allowed to play with the band

If this happens it will be a disaster in my opinion The Ohio State University Marching Band had to admit girls and now is like every other college band

THE OSU band was unique because it was all male. The band did nicely for many years until two words popped up "sexist" and "dıscrimination."
If this happens to the All-Ohio State Fair Boys' Band there won't be any reason for them to play, it will be a plain, ordinary band

ITS TOO bad the fairer sex can't keep its noses out of anything

If the girls want a band, they can have one of their own. They shouldn't be allowed to ruin a really tremendous group of young men who do an excellent job

Jessie Cruse. -
Columbus.All Boys Band;
All Girls Band;
All Together
Giris toting trumpets, trombones and sousaphones
marched onto the Ohio State Fairgrounds Saturday. Does that mean girls are about to invade the famed All-Ohio Boys Band?

"NOT AT ALL," insists Omar P. Blackman, director of the fair's fast-stepping bandsmen, or rather, bandspersons.

Nonetheless, half of the 300 musicians in the spirited marching band this year will be females.
"We have three bands, actually. An All-Ohio State Fair Boys Band, an All-Ohio State Fair Girls Band and an-All-Ohio State Fair Band."

The set-up is not a great deal different from that in previous years, except, of course, the sex of half of the group. PREVIOUSLY, THE BAND was divided into two groups - red and black - which played separate concerts then got together for some performances.

That's the way Blackman is doing it again this year, except all girls will be in one band, all boys in the other. The two groups will meet for some concerts.
Some might think it's a name game to placate fiercely proud alumni of the boys band.
Blackman conceded this is "probably" so and adds, "We all have reverence for what it (the band) was."

SINCE 1925, WITH THE exception of the years when the fair wasn't staged, the band has been a feature attraction at the state fair. It's a prestige group for high school musicians and those who have participated have formed an alumni association through which they can relive nostalgic moments.

The question for this group now, Blackman said, is whether the girls will be admitted, or encouraged to form their own group.

This apparently is one of the larger type problems ressulting from girls joining the band.

BLACKMAN SAID THE MUSICAL program will be the same during the 12-day "band camp" at the fair and minor difficulties in arranging lodging have been worked out.

If you’re interested, the Dispatch did an Easter Sunday piece on my grandmother (the piano teacher) back in 2012. Btw, this is the same grandmother responsible for “needs more nutmeg” in my cookbook.
Songs of Easter joy
April 8, 2012 | Columbus Dispatch, The (OH)
Author/Byline: Kathy Lynn Gray; THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH Page: 1A
Section: News
652 Word
Lanie Davis will play the piano with Easter joy and a true sense of rebirth today at Gender
Road Christian Church.
"I just sorta feel like the Lord gave me a second chance," said Davis, 90, a beloved fixture at the church near Canal Winchester.
Last Easter, Davis couldn't walk and could barely move her fingers.
What had begun as an outpatient gallbladder surgery in November 2010 had quickly turned into a case of blood poisoning -- sepsis -- that doctors said probably would kill her overnight.
Instead, she clawed her way back with the help of doctors and nurses, a huge, supportive family, and the prayers of hundreds whose lives her music had touched.
"These three fingers were numb," Davis said, pointing to her right hand as she sat on the piano bench in the music room of her Gahanna home."Her tongue swelled up, and she was six months on a feeding tube," daughter Charlotte Bougher said as she took up the story. "She was in a wheelchair through July and finally moved back into her own house in December."
Davis, a church pianist since she was 12, returned to her accompanist post at Gender Road Christian full time in September.
Today will cap a week of playing: for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services, and choir rehearsal on Wednesday.
Davis plays for funerals and weddings and gives piano lessons, "but the church music is, I don't know, comfortable. It's my first love. And you get caught up in it," she said.
She still remembers the first piece she learned -
- Carolina Moon -- when she began piano lessons at age 5 in her hometown of Knoxville, Tenn. By age 12, she was playing at Emmanuel Baptist Church; a year later, after her father died, she took on piano students to prop up the family finances. She couldn't afford her own lessons, so her teacher taught her at no charge.
"The rhythm was in me," she said. "My daddy had planted the dream in my head to go to the conservatory in Cincinnati. He thoughtHe thought I could be a concert pianist."
But with the Great Depression in full swing, there was no money for that, so she married in 1941 and began moving from military base to military base with her husband, Frank. She learned to play the organ at one of the bases.
Wherever they lived, she played piano or organ at a local church.
Bougher, the first of her five children, was born in 1947 -- on a Sunday morning as a substitute organist filled in for Davis.
Her last child also was born on a Sunday, in
1965. Davis timed her contractions as she played the organ during a service before making a run for the hospital.
"I think that's why we're all so musical," said Bougher, who is the music director at Gender Road Christian. "She played right up until the minute we were born."
The family moved to Columbus in 1968 and attended Mifflin Presbyterian Church, where Davis served as choir director, then music director. She retired at 65, then played at Broad Street Christian Church and helped Bougher, who taught music at Columbus Academy, for 15 years. When Bougher became music director at Gender Road Christian eight years ago, her mother became the accompanist.
Last Easter, Davis went to church in a wheelchair and played the Hallelujah chorus despite her crippled fingers. She needed to know she could still play, Bougher said.
"The music kept her going - it kept us all going," Bougher said.
This Easter?
"It's a miracle she's back."
