"Of course. We can do what we want.” That's the line, in the hacked emails published by Der Spiegel in 2018, that sums up the sense of entitlement that fuelled Manchester City's cheating under this ownership. Column for @theathleticfc.bsky.social #MCFC www.nytimes.com/athletic/763...

The damage of the Manchester City verdict runs deep. An era of Premier League history is tainted (Gift Article)
This may look like a victory for the Premier League but it has come at a cost that cannot be fully calculated

Weird, their fans were saying they’d won the league after beating Fulham and Brighton. What’s happened?

AT LAST, ELECTRIC CHELSEA LOOK LIKE A PROPER CLUB AGAIN
...but formidable Arsenal still have an extra gear as Arteta triumphs in Basque barn burner
Daily Mail7 Sep 2026OLIVER HOLT Chief Sports Writer

THEY are childhood friends from San Sebastian, who played football on Playa de la Concha, and received eclectic football educations that were influenced by the minds of men such as Johan Cruyff, Pep Guardiola and Rafa Benitez.

They were both fine, cultured midfielders, thinkers who were born to be distinguished coaches.

They met as coaches for the first time yesterday, dressed identically in the style of the fashionable manager, shortsleeved shirts, dark slacks and pumps with dashes of white.

But they are not in Basque Country any more. English football has them now. And yesterday afternoon, they were swallowed up by its passions and its glories. Mikel Arteta and Xabi Alonso, the managers of Arsenal and Chelsea masterminded an absolute barn burner of a game, a contest full of sound and fury and, sometimes, footballing beauty that was a credit to both of them.

At the end of the breathlessness, Arsenal ran out winners and even at this early stage of the season, it felt significant. Chelsea had come here as pretenders to Arsenal’s throne after a swashbuckling start to their campaign but even if they did themselves credit, they could not quite keep pace with the champions.

Alonso (right, with Arteta) saw his side produce some stunning attacking football and broke with lightning speed and skill. This result suggested they will improve dramatically on their 10th-place finish last season but that they have to take another step forward to be a match for Arteta’s side.

This Chelsea has many attributes but it cannot quite match Arsenal’s completeness. Arsenal are an eight or nine out of ten everywhere on the field. And their substitutes are on the same level.

Chelsea have weaknesses in defence and midfield that were their undoing at the Emirates and will be again. They ar…

Glad window is finally shut. Enough of that fucking nonsense. Let Mikel concentrate on doing what he does best and that’s being the best manager in the league. IMO we have the best GK, defence and midfield in the league. I’m a little pissed off about LW but what can you do. Let’s go win it. #Vamos

Manchester City, still awaiting a verdict on charges they broke Premier League rules for a decade, have equalled the British transfer record by signing Enzo Fernandez for 125m pounds. They've now spent more than 300m pounds on three new midfielders this window. Man City deny wrongdoing.

Maybe went under the radar a little bit, but thought Saka was quietly excellent in that second half. Bruno really encouraging. Rice is the best all-round midfielder in the world. Huge fan of his but not sure how Kai stayed on the pitch. Gillett can get to fuck.

To cheer myself up, I had a look at City BlueSky (the sensible ones not that Big Steve MCFC who is 40 odd and owns a replica CL trophy) and safe to say they think this season could be a shambles. That's lovely stuff.

City without Rodri and Silva are going to really, really struggle. Can say it now they’ve left but just incredibly talented footballers. Anderson is nowhere near their level.

Romero is a prick and not convinced he’s that good, but there’s something very very funny about Spurs’ captain and a player they were putting in ‘best CB in the world’ conversations, wanting to join The Arsenal isn’t there. I guess it’s the ‘istory of Tottenham

Saw a Reddit thread the other week comparing international sides to club football teams. The majority of comments said England were spurs. Fans have delusions of grandeur. Will talk a good game but ultimately are shit and will fail at any major hurdle. Bang on.

I’ve seen a Liverpool fan in a full PSG kit celebrating, Chelsea fans (who failed to qualify for Europe) posting their “we’ve won the lot” bollocks and SPURS fans twerking for PSG. And we’re told we have an unbearable fan base. Liverpool fan was a fully grown men btw.

Last night was crushing, but 2006 was the end of a glorious period, this is the start. I fully believe that with Mikel and this group of players we’ll get there in this competition. I have nothing but immense pride for the club and what they’ve achieved. (Also, that ref was a fucking disgrace).

A fantastic read. This is more than a football club. This is a sense of home and community for me and so many others. It’s where you first fell in love with football. The crank of the turnstile at Highbury, the chippy on the corner, the “get your Gooner”. The Arsenal. Today is for all of us ❤️
