Odd that so much of my YT recommendations now are of Andrew Garfield, who I do like quite a lot, but there's no reason YT should "think" this. But, damn, he's currently sporting a mane so glorious that even Aslan would admire it-- whilst moaning slightly about being middle-aged.

Nice Top 2% result on today's Cinematrix, with five 1% answers (three for the Fondas, two for the Hustons) and two 2%ers for Elia Kazan, but got lazy with the remaining two and did better with them than I should have (John Wick 3 & Streetcar). But it's rare I get to pull LOVESICK out for anything.
Listings ad for LOVESICK (1983) with Dudley Moore, Elizabeth McGovern, Selma Diamond, Wallace Shawn, Ron Silver, John Huston and Alec Guinness as an imaginary Sigmund Freud.

Yes, you have; yes, you have; and yes, you have. You do so endlessly, relentlessly, entirely undeservedly, you greasy. graceless, caterwauling chimera of all that's wrong with America. No one, literally no one, has ever wailed more about being a victim than you-- and you're just gonna get worse.

Very nice to see how positively critics are responding to Austin Abrams in the new RESIDENT EVIL. Lad's been on a tear the past few years, usually to little credit, despite stealing all of Apple's comedy WOLFS from both Clooney and Brad Pitt and nailing his role in WEAPONS. Good for him.

Now that it's up on Prime (location-depending), you may find it worthwhile to glance at SIGNAL ONE. It's very much an imperfect and limited film, but it's also grappling with some generically-atypical concepts and gets more interesting as it goes.

I seem to remember a certain Austrian painter who had a similar vision of another continent. I also seem to remember that American politicians didn't want to do anything about that for ages, either...

Hey, dipshit, who started all of this bullshit? It certainly wasn't Canada. Over the past 200+ years, we've learned: we absolutely hate it when you pay any attention to us, because it usually means headaches or invasion. We try to be conciliators, peacekeepers even. Gee, I wonder why...

If there's a cinematic equivalent of spray-on cheese, it's MAYDAY. It's as processed and artificial as can be, and even calling it "cheese" is a stretch.

Lovely: scored in the Top 1% on today's Cinematrix, thanks to three 1% results on the Bette Davis line, and another four 2% results elsewhere. Worst result was a 7%er for CHARADE. A little unduly proud of that. This is what happens when your brain somehow won't let go of stuff you knew as a kid.
Cinematrix explanation:

Top line, all Bette Davis: THE WHALES OF AUGUST; THE SCAPEGOAT, with Alec Guinness; and the bonkers MADAME SIN.

Middle line, all Walter Matthau: CACTUS FLOWER (Goldie Hawn won for it); the classic CHARADE; and Billy Wilder's THE FORTUNE COOKIE, the first teaming of Lemmon and Matthau.

Bottom line: SAVE THE TIGER (Lemmon's Best Actor winner); AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS (for MacLaine); and MY FELLOW AMERICANS (Lemmon with James Garner and Lauren Bacall).

Hey, @vulture.com: liked the Three Days Of The Condor theme to today's Cinematrix, but there's a problem. Discovered you can't put in a valid film, Situation Hopeless - But Not Serious (a '66 film with Redford & Alec Guinness), by any means. Question is, how many other films can't be entered?

For the record, I adored LADYHAWKE when I was a kid. Still do, in a very nostalgic way. After all, it's responsible for my lifelong crush on Michelle Pfeiffer. That's probably true for quite a few of us of, uh, "a certain age."

Rewatching (1st time in ages) Richard Donner's CONSPIRACY THEORY and you've got to love the absolute cheek of having Mel Gibson flee the bad guys into a cinema showing... Richard Donner's LADYHAWKE, as Rutger Hauer clip-clops in to kill John Wood. And, of course, Gibson ends up shouting, "BOMB!"

Kit Connor as Cyclops? Sure, fine, so long as the give him more (and much better) stuff to do than they gave James Marsden. And, you'd lose the puppy-dog eyes of his, which would be a waste. But, damn, it'll be hard to forget the sweet and dashing figure he cut as Captain America.

Rewatching BULWORTH for the first time in 28 years, having pretty much forgotten it entirely since then. The most striking thing about it now is that cast-- young Halle Berry, Don Cheadle, Paul Sorvino, Oliver Platt, Sean Astin, Laurie Metcalf, Wendell Pierce and the oh-so-missed Jack Warden.

Sorry, Hank, then it's not YOUR research. And, no, the excuses don't wash. You could've accepted that you were overwhelmed and done other things-- like delaying videos or projects, or pleading for extensions from publishers or associates. You deserve all of the flack you're getting.

BTW, the kids on the tram didn't have real cigarettes: they probably had Popeye cigarettes-- i.e., candy cigarettes (and the most famous "fronted" by toon, no less). Believe it or not, they used to be a really big thing. They're mostly banned or limited now.

So few things to celebrate these days, but Mel Brooks reaching 100 is definitely one of them. If only Anne and Carl were still around to celebrate it with him. One of the absolute titans of post-WW2 comedy, maybe THE titan, who's still somehow working today (albeit in a very limited capacity).

THE SHEEP DETECTIVES is as sweet and delightful as you'd hope. For as lovely as the cast is, the movie's real scene stealer is wee Tommy Birchall as the Winter Lamb, as adorable a character as one could imagine.

Can genuinely say that TUNER is one of the better films I've seen in quite a while. (It'd also make a nifty double-bill with BABY DRIVER.) The first half is esp. strong, before capital-P Plot really sets in. And Leo Woodall's really good in it, as charming as he is old-school "dreamy."

Gawddamnit... Anthony Head was always terrific to watch: a versatile charmer, the sort of Brit who could make both young and middle-aged women swoon into schoolgirl silliness. A shame so many productions aside from BUFFY gave him very little to do. RIP. / and he was also very nice on Twatter.

Only tonight discovered BETTER LATE THAN NEVER (1983), a variation on the BEDTIME STORY, later DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, theme. Not hard to see why I'd never heard of it before: it's dreadful. How a movie with David Niven, Art Carney and Maggie Smith could falter so badly is mystifying.

Watching Conan O'Brien's interview with Charlie Puth, the more I reckon he has to interview Bill Bailey at some point. Bill would probably fascinate him completely and the conversation could go on delightfully for ages, whether it's about comedy or music or both at the same time.

Getting the feeling "Good night, and good luck, motherfuckers" is going to be repeated by all of the US late night hosts at some point this week. Kimmel, Stewart and Meyers almost certainly will, and even Fallon and Conan (somehow) might, too. But the killer? Get David Strathairn to do it, too.

REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES is, in many ways, a very Hallmark sort of film, though definitely more thoughtful in every way, but it benefits so, so much from its core performances from Sally Field and Lewis Pullman. They're the reason to see it, along with excellent voice work from Alfred Molina.

Even now, it's still tough to watch a River Phoenix film, even a flimsy one like LITTLE NIKITA, without missing what might have been for him. Damn, the camera loved him and he could more than hold his own with the best of them, including Ford, Redford and Poitier. Such a loss then, still one now.

Last night, watched Hitchcock's TORN CURTAIN for the first time in decades and... holy hell, it's a terrible movie, possibly Hitch's worst. Excruciatingly dull, poorly-conceived and abominably-paced, it somehow managed to make Paul Newman charmless, vacuous and, above all, USELESS. Dreadful. 1/2

Sad to hear of the passing of Beau Starr, one of those "that-guy" character actors through dozens of film and TV shows, but most Canucks of a certain vintage will remember him well as Callum Keith Rennie's superior Lt. Welsh on DUE SOUTH. Here's hoping there's a Diefenbaker waiting for him...

One of this DD's huge problems is that it asks us to believe that Kingpin's power became so great and oppressive while so many characters did NOTHING, including Spider-Man, Echo, She-Hulk and both Hawkeyes. Er, no. Hell, Wong alone could've fixed all this with just a little spinny-spinny action.

Nice to see that Prime (Canada) has just added 1987's DEAD OF WINTER with Mary Steenburgen, Roddy McDowall and Jan Rubes. In so many ways, it's such a slight (and flawed) film, but it's also a film for which I have more fondness than it probably deserves. But gotta love that cast and setting...
