Annie Dillard is our greatest nature writer. But her writing on writing always floored me. I used to assign "To Fashion a Text" to my grad students and the discussions, inevitably, would land on this wonderful meditation. We are richer for her willingness to trade memories for words.

Prior to the 1850s, the Bay Area had an estimated 540,000 acres of tidal wetlands and marshes. As the region was settled, those wetlands were dredged and filled. An ecological reckoning came in the early 1960s with the Save the Bay campaign. That activism lives on today.

The Trump Administration's model of governance at this point is nothing more than a 24-7 trolling operation. Policy is set by what Stephen Miller, JD Vance, et al. believe will best own the libs. The left loves critically endangered wolves? Let's let the ranchers kill them. bbc.com/news/article...

The US president says the move will help ranchers, but conservationists say it could derail efforts to recover populations.

Last week, the news site NOTUS broke the story that the Trump administration is considering a land exchange in Yosemite National Park with a private developer. The deal would allow the developer to build a private road through the park. www.sierraclub.org/sierra/propo...

“Nothing dollarable is safe, however guarded,” John Muir wrote to Teddy Roosevelt in 1908 in his failed bid to save Hetch Hetchy––words as true today as they were 120 years ago. My latest for @sierramagazine.bsky.social www.sierraclub.org/sierra/propo...

Night paddling on the Russian River in Northern California in search of bioluminescence produced by microorganisms called dinoflagellates, which contain a compound called luciferin. Our paddles shimmered and sparked as we moved through the water. But capturing the glow on camera was tricky.

My latest @sierramagazine.bsky.social: “It’s a truly insane cycle of management. First you burn entire stands of mature forests to reduce the fire risk [creating] a hellscape of flammable invasive weeds. Then you spray those weeds with poison to keep them from catching fire.” bit.ly/4g5adZg

Feels a little tangential these days, given the "dark" state of the world, but for those interested, here's my story in @atmosmag.bsky.social about the growing crisis of light pollution and the increasing numbers of dark sky defenders pushing to bring back the night. atmos.earth/climate-solu...

A beautiful, rare New Years astrophotography session on the Mendocino Coast. The darkest skies within 3 hours of the Bay Area. The dew was relentless but the stars were magnificent. This image of the Orion Nebula would have taken days at home—here it took 2 hours. #astrophotography #orionnebula

The latest issue of @sierramagazine.bsky.social has one of the loveliest covers I've seen--and I am lucky enough to have the cover story. The article, though, which examines the Trump Administration's attack on US public lands and environmental law, is not nearly as pretty. #publiclands

Great taking with my great editor Ted Ross from @thefern.org about my latest story for @highcountrynews.org about the rise of pecans in southern New Mexico and the decline of the iconic river, the Rio Grande, upon which they depend.

Pecan growers harnessed the Rio Grande to become the nation’s largest supplier of the thirsty nut. But, as Jeremy Miller reports in this piece for FERN's special issue on “Food and Power in the West,” the river is running dry, and farmers who depend on it are being forced to do without.
