Shelduck, Grey Heron and Spoonbills shortly after sunset this evening on Breydon Water. Still a small number of Whimbrel about, too.

White Stork near Shotesham early evening - note distal half of bill is muddy. At close range it is possible to see that the metal ring on the right upper-leg bears a printed 'code'.

An interesting duo on Gorleston beach at 7.30 this evening: a Caspian Gull with untypically dark upper-wing coverts, and a possible hybrid/intergrade showing Great Black-backed x Caspian influence.

Gorleston beach 1930hrs: juv Caspian Gull (probably female), found by Oscar Lawrence mid-morning (but not located mid-afternoon when beach crowded). Last seen snoozing 1950hrs.

A study in 'jizz' - looking W as the sun declines, a Spoonbill at the confluence of the Yare and Waveney. On nearby exposed mud adult and juv Little Egret, c. 375 Icelandic Black-tailed Godwit and 4 Knot. Two adult Mediterranean Gulls > E towards their 'capital' Great Yarmouth.

A successful hunt for Sulphur Clover in S. Norfolk yesterday also yielded a single dense patch of Annual Beard-grass (aka "Rabbit's-foot Grass"). Roadside reserves provide vital protection for the former. Latter known in S England since 16th C at least.

Hedge Woundwort and Tutsan in S. Norfolk this morning; also the first White Admiral, 'hutchinsoni' type Comma, Meadow Browns and Large Skippers for 2026. Good also to have an overdue catchup with Matt Shore (all too often 'gone fishin' these days!).

Thirsty work for a queen? At first I thought this hornet, here drinking at a garden pond at Lound Lakes Suffolk Wildlife Trust reserve, was a Broad-bodied Chaser dragonfly.

@norwichbirder.bsky.social Hi James - attached, photographed at Salthouse in early Sept. last year, has just been accepted as Norfolk's 1st Southern Small White. The youthful finder sought advice on submission so I am glad I encouraged him to do so. Would the Society welcome a 'write up'? Best, J.

Have just received an interesting article from SW France about what appears to be a new, possibly 'invasive', addition to European avifauna - Lelothix lutea variously known as the Peking Nightingale or 'Lipstick Bird'. Said to be four figure populations in N. Italy and nr. Pyrennees.

Two of the dozen or so still flowering Small-flowered Catchflies noted along Gorleston cliffs last eve - as well as several soaked in turquoise weed-killer, alas. I have never previously noted a pink one showing 'quinquevulnera' marks.

Common Blue and Wall Butterfly at Lound Lakes ('Nuffolk') today. The latter, a male, showed signs of wear and could have emerged last month - four weeks earlier than the traditional emergence of this species' second brood.

On the S Wall of Breydon Water another Painted Lady this evening. At least 16 Mediterranean Gulls, very few waders, one Common Tern, excellent view of hunting Hobby and over N Wall a juv Peregrine 'seeing off' a male Marsh Harrier. Two Egyptian Geese on 'the Lumps' after 8pm were a surprise.

Perhaps on account of the dry spring, the flowers of some Pyramidal Orchids are scarcely larger than a thumbnail; a dozy Tree Bumblebee B. hypnorum, a recent colonist, allowed a close approach last evening.

@davidpappleton.bsky.social You may have perceived that your namesake is the Norfolk recorder for lacewings, Snakeflies etc.(!) Botany angle: I was photographing Sweet Cicely (gone over now and whether wild or a throw-out I am unsure) at that grid ref when the Snakefly landed on me. Super locality

@applewildlife.bsky.social My apologies! But a little serendipity as you say is always nice. A little reading around the subject tells me that Snakeflies are seen when dislodged from the treetops. Wind strength only moderate on Sunday. Remarkable that she should alight on my hand.

A Small Tortoiseshell which I rescued last Sunday from inside the quaint church at Burgh Saint Peter opposite Carlton Marshes - a Peacock butterfly was lying dead close by. Sunshine helped the Tortoiseshell to revive. Hopefully it had strength enough to get through till morning.

Interesting plants encountered during a visit to three Suffolk churches with the Roundtower Society at the weekend: last year's remains of the very local Small Teasel at Mettlingham, and the locally common Meadow Saxifrage at Barsham.
