Mind Your Own Chicken
I came across this poem recently while searching the Internet. I don't know who wrote it or how old it is, and I don't understand why it surfaced in my algorithm (that branch of computer analytics is a mystery to me). But I'm grateful it did, because it showed me some perspectives I hadn't considered. If you see a person with a chicken in his hand…

Even if the Bible was inerrant (it’s not), no one’s interpretation of Scripture is inerrant so it’s really just a false appeal to certainty. Theology gets way more interesting when we set it free from having all the right answers and let it be a dialogue.

Don’t Lose the Wonder
This week revealed a stark truth: our fast-paced lives are draining our spiritual vibrancy. Like a colorless parking lot, many have flattened their perception of God into a one-dimensional figure. We've traded imagination for certainty, limiting our spiritual journeys. Let's reclaim the awe and variety essential for true connection with the divine.

Turned Tables
This year marked a unique milestone in my journey as an educator. I have dedicated 20 years of my life to shaping young minds inside of a classroom. When I stepped into the classroom for the first time at an all-boys school in New Orleans, I had no idea in that moment that I would go on to devote two decades of my life, still inspiring the minds of the next generation.

25 Years of Forgetting
Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. All around the globe people stopped to commemorate the violent attack on American soil that ended the lives of nearly 3,000 individuals. I remember exactly where I was that day. I walked into a lecture hall at Xavier University of Louisiana and my professor immediately dismissed class. His words to us were simple, "Go home and be safe." I rushed back to my dorm room, turned on my cable news show, and watched with sheer amazement as the Twin Towers crumbled before my eyes.

Be warned. God never co-signs harm done in his name to the little, left out, looked over, and the least. Don't attach the divine name to this evil.

Conquer Your Doubt: This Test is For Your Good Deuteronomy 8.11-16 July 10, 2016 "On December 23, 1776, Thomas Paine published the first of his sixteen American Crisis pamphlets, written to stir a reluctant colonial population into resisting British oppression. He opened with words that still echo 240 years later: "These are the times that try men's souls.

Behavior, Not Belief
I want to make a confession: preaching isn't my favorite thing to do as a pastor. Please don't misunderstand me. Preaching ranks high on my list of callings as a faith leader. Over my decades in the pulpit, I've been graced to preach in wonderful places, inspired by beautiful people. There's something about that moment standing before a congregation — the atmosphere, the cadence, the energy — I love all of it.

Here is an excerpt from a sermon I preached February 18, 2018. The message was titled, "Everyone Deserves to Be Happy" from Psalm 1.1-3. I hope these words bless you. Graced & grateful, jsb "Within the body of Christ, we must be on our guard against promoting teachings that don't align with the faith of our Scriptures. Despite how they sound- despite how well they preach- despite how good they feel, we must be on our watch against the little cliches and catch-phrases that seek to undermine, subvert, and distort the life of faith we are called to live...

From Grilling to God
The author reflects on a meaningful moment with his son before he returns to college, where they discuss sports and the need for reasoning behind decisions. This prompts a deeper exploration of faith and uncertainty, likening it to the biblical story of Abram. Emphasizing trust in God’s guidance, the author encourages embracing the unknown rather than seeking control.
