A message from Danny Trejo’s son about his father’s situation in Ben Shapiro’s pro-ICE movie.

“For anyone seeing this shit with my dad...
He was booked on a film, it's not pro-ice, it's not overtly pro anything. His agent described it as "a complicated story about a complicated time, where everyone looks bad except you, the hardworking Mexican shop owner who just wants peace"
He jumped at the idea of playing a good guy.
About 2 weeks into shooting everyone, including us, found out Ben Shapiro was involved.
My 82 year old dad has never heard of Ben Shapiro, I had to explain to him who that is, and what kind of guy he is.
My dad contractually can't bad mouth him, the film, or walk away without being sued for breach of contract. He couldn't even release the statement he wanted to.
It's fucked up. He's handcuffed to this stupid project, and swaths of people have instantly turned their back on him without knowing any of the facts.
Ben Shapiro got Mexicans to abandon one of their heroes, got his own name to the top of google's searches, and made us look like angry fools lacking any nuance. He wins.”

First #HalloweenCards of the season!
A horizontal card with a yellow border. There is a blue rectangle with an outside scene. A silhouette of ground and a tree can be seen. Three jack-o-lanterns with different funny faces are in full color on the bottom. A crossing Moon can be seen in the top right with a bat flying over it.
A striped horizontal card. It has a frame of orange, black, and white around it with a background of faded autumnal stripes. three, black glittery bats in a descending size start from the bottom left and work their way up to the top right. A horizontal card with a fancy cream and diamond frame. Inside, there is another frame of an orange sky with little bats and witches flying over a full moon. Inside of that, there is an inky black background with two cartoon witches. The witches have green skin and are pointing towards each other while looking at the viewer. Between them is a rectangle of white with black spider webs and a little sign that says: Moon's out, Broom's out with another witch silhouette flying over a moon.

A horizontal card. The outside edge is white. Then there is an inner edge of vertical lines in multi-colors. Over that, is a border of blues with an inter rectangle of green that has a white center with blue flowers and blue text that says wish you were here. The center flower has a yellow and red butterfly on it.

I wrote this #poem not long after my mom died. It was first published in Red Rock Review.
Dinner Party Minus You

No matter how we arrange
plates, flat planets at rest
in a rough-hewn galaxy,
it isn’t the same. We wonder

if squeezing tighter until juiced
or talking ourselves into early
nights will abate the chill
of absence—cracks in our family

let the cold loss in. If we set
a place, a fair-sized moon,
would you orbit us awhile
& grant us a tether in this space?
