I'm always amazed at those who unhestitatingly use "woke" as a self-evident shorthand for everything wrong in their world. The opposite of being woke is being asleep: suckered, ignorant, gullible, non-sceptical. Curious why those us who are woke haven't embraced "asleep" as the obvious retort.

Latest energy figures are out for 2024-25 - once again 83% of Australia's gas is exported or used to convert gas to PNG exports. There is no gas shortage. We do not need more gas. We need to #TAXtheGAS
Charts showing in 2024-25 4,862PJ of gas was exported or used in LNG plants, while only 1,016PJ was use by the domestic economy of mining, manufacturing, residential and gas power plants.

We (rightly) talk a lot about gas, but we should not forget we export a hell of a lot more coal and most of it is for burning for electricity rather than being used to produce steel. And all of it destroys the planet. #NoNewMines
Charts showing annual exports of thermal and coking coal and LNG since 1960-61

In 2024-25:

Thermal coal: 204,847ky
Coking coal: 146,987kt
LNG: 79,128kt

their stories. All of them, like all of us, are living through time: being affected by what the government does, experiencing the consequences that cascade through a life. On housing and incomes, Albanese Labor has begun to challenge inequality. In four years, though, it has increased the JobSeeker payment permanently in real terms just once.
Goldie points me to the actions taken by Whitlam, Hawke and Keating on unemployment payments. She wants, she says, “to remind Labor of who they used to be”. For politicians, too, time passes, defines them – and is gone.
