And, before we can develop an instrument that does capture it, we need to decide exactly what statistics anxiety is and what it is not.

Importantly, I’m not saying statistics anxiety doesn’t exist. There may well be an anxiety out there that is specific to statistics. I just don’t think the STARS is capturing it particularly well.

What are they measuring? It could be some kind of quantitative anxiety, or it could reflect more general anxieties around educational situations (e.g., attending classes, seeking help, taking exams). Most likely, it’s a mixture. More work is needed on that one.

This is the first of two multi-site, multi-analysis studies that found whatever the commonly used Statistics Anxiety Rating Scale (STARS) measures overlaps considerably with whatever the Revised Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale measures.

Last week, I stood down as Director of the RoSE Network. I’m so proud of what RoSE has become and grateful for all the wonderful friends I made along the way, but my research interests are evolving and it was time to pass the baton. I know RoSE is in great hands with @msjonesmp.bsky.social & co.! 🌹

The implications aren’t trivial. Treating them separately risks duplicating measures and fragmenting theory, resulting in parallel literatures around what may be the same underlying fear and stifling research progress.

Again, strong overlap: • scales were very strongly related • items clustered more by type of experience (e.g., tests, help-seeking) than by domain (maths vs stats) • associations with other variables were statistically equivalent • incremental variance was negligible

Study 2: We re-tested it internationally: 6,885 students, 83 universities, 33 countries. We examined it in even more ways: • correlations • EFA & CFA structure • associations with 11 related variables • incremental validity

Result? Substantial overlap: • scales were very strongly related • items clustered more by type of experience (e.g., tests, help-seeking) than by domain (maths vs stats) • high stats anxiety/low maths anxiety (& vice-versa) was extremely rate • state anxiety was similar for stats and maths tests

There's still time to join us for a new webinar on Statistics Education Research on the 11th! Register here iase-web.org/Webinars.php and join in on the conversation #StatsEd #EduSky #research
Two figures discussing statistics research. This flyer states: Untold Stories in Statistics Education Research: Contemplation to Publication and Beyond

11 September 2025; 15:00 UTC (see below for localized date/time)

Webinar duration: 90 minutes

Presenter(s): Elinor Jones (Chair), Larry Lesser, Mine Dogucu and Florian Berens

Many research endeavours have a backstory which is more complex, nonlinear, messy, and instructive than the final article suggests. This webinar brings together authors of diverse statistics education studies to share how their research unfolded over time, including unanticipated obstacles, conflicting reviewer feedback, and evolving perspectives. Expect honesty, practical wisdom, and a deeper appreciation for the start-to-finish journey of ‘doing research’ in statistics education.
