We added pill bugs to our classroom terrarium today and students wrote down facts they know about these small crustaceans along with a few questions they have. I have the best job.

I have 2 students with no English (yet) and I'm the only teacher they see for literacy. I'm spending my Sunday figuring out how to include them in our literacy learning block and make time to work with them in a small group to support them. This story is not unique to my school. #OntEd

What does that look like day-to-day? Our admin team decided the needs are greatest in Gr. 4-8 so the ELL teacher tries to work with as many students from 7 different classrooms as they can in a day. Kids in K-3 (and their educators) receive no ELL support. #OntEd

That means one teacher spending half a day serving the needs of the same population of students. Our admin team fought for more support and last week we got an extra 0.5 allocation. Now one teacher has a whole day to try to serve the needs of as many English language learners as they can. #OntEd

My school has ~400 students, 85% of whom speak a language other than English at home. Six years ago, my school was allocated 3 ELL teachers. Students in Gr. 2-8 received 40-150 minutes of language support a day, depending on their needs. This year, my school was allocated half a teacher. #OntEd

The refrigeration system at my Sobeys has been out since Tuesday. Empty freezers. No fish, meat, eggs, or dairy available. Shelves that usually hold salads and dips and prepared foods are covered with roller shades. Suddenly feels like a little doomsday prep wouldn’t be such a bad idea over here.
