When patients are not heard by their doctors there can be devastating consequences. So why does this happen & what can be done to address it? On the cover, Dr Rageshri Dhairyawan explores this question. Read her full essay & more: tinyurl.com/5c7xwj2e ‪@drrageshri.bsky.social‬
Cover of The Lancet's Feb 15, 2025 issue. Quote on cover reads "At the core of patients not being heard is the unequal power dynamic between doctor and patient. Each holds a different form of expertise...It is vital that we combine this expertise and collaborate."

Caesareans are rising fast in the UK – but giving birth is getting worse for women
In England, the national caesarean rate is now 42%. Which is way higher than many other wealthy countries.

In the @bmj.com this month, we read about preterm birth & neonatal mortality in England. Some things easier (and cheaper) to sort. Eg getting people to follow guidelines. Others much harder. All the social determinants of health. Racism, poverty & more. #MedSky #SDOH www.bmj.com/content/387/...
Article on preterm birth:

Excerpt here.

Preterm births are an important
cause of neonatal mortality.
They account for three quarters of stillbirths, including late fetal losses (75%) and neonatal deaths (74%)," and can result in severe lifelong morbidities in those who survive. The consequences have far reaching effects on families, who can experience psychological trauma and financial difficulties as they care for affected children.
Recommendations by the House of Lords select committee include that the government and NHS England provide the resources to ensure that clinical guidance is implemented consistently in all regions. Since 2019, the Saving Babies' Lives care bundle has provided guidance on how to optimise maternity services to reduce stillbirth and preterm birth and its consequences.
