Had a great evening last night cooking my granny's stovies recipe as part of Elaine Zedack's 'Eating Roots' project on family food traditions. My mum and aunts bombarded Elaine with stories of food and family, and I don't know how she's going to wrangle it into an essay, but I can't wait to read it.

Quick visit to Lindisfarne on our way back to Scotland. It's peaceful despite the tourists and must have always been peaceful, except for that bit with the vikings. Can't visit without buying mead and one day I want to walk the old pilgrimage route across the sands to the island. Lovely place! 🥰

Wondering whether just to go to bed, but decided I'd quite like a cheese scone. Hey presto - fruit scones for him and parmesan and thyme scones for me.

Couldn't resist these vibrant green tomatoes from my local veg shop. Honestly never seen anything like them. Googled some fried green tomato recipes, adapted to what I had in the cupboard, Saturday lunch was sorted. 💚

The last dish I cooked in Ivan Day's historical kitchen. Yorkshire Pudding cooked in a pan set below roasting beef or mutton. Initially called Dripping Pudding, it was first called Yorkshire Pudding in Hannah Glasse's 'Art of Cookery' in 1747. We used beef, which is shown here roasting on a...

Lamb chops in a Victorian up-and-over oven. Cooked in Ivan Day's historical kitchen. The hinged hood allows both sides of the chops to cook without having to remove them from the hooks. Flip the hood, turn the oven around to face the fire again, simple! Cooking technology at its finest.

At the start of Wuthering Heights, Lockwood visits Heathcliff and describes going in to the main room of the house. He says it would usually be a kitchen and parlour but, at Wuthering Heights, the kitchen has been moved to another room and he observes no sign of cooking in the main room’s fireplace.

The Jane Eyre seed cake recipe from A Gothic Cookbook is so good. I was delighted when @alessandrapino.bsky.social asked me to make it for her talk 'A Gothic Feast' in Haworth at the weekend. And it went down a treat. You remember Eddie Izzard did "Cake or death?". This is "Cake and Death". 🍰💀

I always seem to come back from Bavaria with something baking-related these days. I found a farm shop selling ancient varieties of wheat, but rather than coming home with a kilo of wheat, or even wheat flour, I decided to bring these ancient grain cake mixes. Let's see how it goes...

The cakes in the bakery in Munich were good, but they don't hold a candle to the homemade cakes you get when you visit your Bavarian family. And yes, we have had cake every day we've been here. This was so good!

Bavaria may not be famous for food in the way France or Italy are, but there's a Bavarian tradition of cake making that is simply wonderful. This cake is made by one of my German family and I gotta tell you, it's amazing. 🍓🍓

I needed an example of a recipe from Mrs MacIver's "Cookery and Pastry" that we would consider unusual and unlikely to eat nowadays. (It's for a thing, I'm looking at how some of her recipes are still very familiar to us while others are not). So, Brain Cakes.

An apple loaf, from Mrs Frazer's 4th edition, 1804. Line a tin with crustless slices of bread, buttered on the outside and packed closely together. Pare, core and chop a dozen apples and stew them with a little butter, wine and water, then add some lemon zest and cinnamon. Fill up the tin with...

The Well of Seven Heads, Loch Oich. In 1663, Alasdair and Ranald MacDonald of Keppoch were murdered by their uncle and his six sons. Iain Lom, kinsman to the murdered men, petitioned a MacDonald clan chief who obtained letters of "fire and sword" so the killers could be brought to justice.

Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness. My favourite Loch Ness fact - it contains more water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined.

Boleskine House. Built by the Frasers of Lovat, C18th, famous as the home of Aleister Crowley then Jimmy Page. Gutted in a 2015 fire and derelict for years. Bought by a trust and rebuilt, now open to the public for the first time. Renovated with nods to each part of its history. Beautiful.

Rain can't dampen the beauty of the West Highlands. Coffee at the 18th-century Drovers Inn, the Commando Memorial in Spean Bridge, then found our lovely cottage on the south side of Loch Ness and went exploring with a walk to the Falls of Foyers, which moved Robert Burns to poetry.

From Mrs Frazer's 1804 fourth edition - An Italian Pyramid. Decreasing circles of puff pastry layered with preserved fruits - apples, raspberries, pears, apricots and blackberries, topped with a preserved orange "cut in imitation of a pine apple with a top of bay leaves". This was fun to make! 🍊🍍

On Saturday, at the World Marmalade Awards, Ivan Day gave a talk about the history of citrus fruits in Britain and the important role that merchants played in importing and selling them. He mentioned there was a historical recipe for Seville orange marmalade with long pepper.

Had a fantastic day yesterday at the World Marmalade Awards at Dalemain House in the Lake District National Park near Penrith in Cumbria. A fascinating talk by Ivan Day, lots of interesting new people and more marmalade than you can shake a slice of toast at. Already wishing I'd bought more...🍊

Lovely day! A big long walk along the White Cart and into Linn Park, where we picked wild garlic. I love Linn Park, you would never even know you were in a city. Then we stopped at The Old Smiddy for a late lunch and pints. I've had worse days off work.

An omelette seems a bit basic, but what about 'An Aumullete'? The first time I saw this in Mrs MacIver's 1774 recipe book, it took me a few seconds to say it out loud and realise that's all it was. Her book has a lot of French influence (as did 18th-century Edinburgh) and 'omelette' is French, so..

The Spaniards Inn and Kenwood House. In 1780, rioters marched on Hampstead to attack Kenwood House. The landlord of the Spaniards gave them free drinks, delaying them enough for the local militia to show up. The pub dates from 1585. Dick Turpin was a regular. And it's mentioned in Dracula.

Zaika Taal in Glasgow for lunch. Amritsari Salmon starter, fried in spices, crisp yet tender. Murgh biryani with subtle flavours of rosewater and mint. Peshawari naan was soft, coconutty heaven. Not pictured, the nicest mixed pickle I've ever had. Lovely staff. Strong recommendation.

One visit to Newcastle, I ordered a "breakfast stottie" in a cafe and posted it online, then was (nicely) roasted by Geordies telling me it wasn't a stottie. Since then I've found the real thing, but it got me thinking about why it matters. medievalfoodwithjennie.substack.com/p/the-great-...

This is the last stottie post for now. A couple of people mentioned bacon and sausage, so I went for a breakfast stottie this morning. Homemade haggis and a fried egg. Cultural appropriation? Fusion cuisine? 😂 It tastes amazing! 😋

We're going to need a bigger plate! This is half of a stottie with pease pudding, ham and a little Colman's mustard and it tastes really good. As a Geordie guy on Threads said to me, "Get it doon ya gob hinny" 🤣

After the "Nottie a Stottie" debacle of my last visit to Newcastle (I ate a breakfast bap advertised as a stottie, posted it online and got roasted by Geordies), I got the real deal this time. Stotties and pease pudding from Hunter's Deli in Grainger Market this morning. Just got to get some ham...
