Reworking The City I Love, It Speaks To Me for #Noir-vemberJam to include more solid group play rules and solo/duet clarifications! I really hope folks enjoy the updates in November. I may also have something planned for this in the new year :3

Game text that reads:
You can always roll d4's when you're... Hot on the Trail. Dectives: You should describe the characters you meet around the City using the Tags list on page 5 (you can always make a new Tag). Interview and grill them using your stats (Melancholy, Grit, Smoke, Lust, Man, and Dame) to try and gather clues as to The City’s whereabouts. Lust and Grit successes always increase Man by +1. Melancholy and Smoke successes always increase Dame by +1.

Detectives go through several Hot On The Trail Scenes in a row. This is the longest part of play in The City I Love, It Speaks To Me. It is also the most interpersonal and interactive side of play in this game. Have fun, get lost in it all, get bruised, bloodied, and broken. Get back up again anyway. You got a job to finish.

Italic Text group rules: In a perfect world Hot on the Trail scenes would be like film cutaways and smash cuts. Picture a Detective rounding a corner in a tense moment to cut away to another Detective grilling a suspect. But this is a TTRPG, not a film. You as players (and Guide) should work out when to end a scene and flip between your fellow Detectives. If a player feels it would be a good time to cut away to someone else, they are free to say so. Encouraging players to share and move the spotlight is a good thing.
I also encourage Detectives in group play to interact with one another, even as different Detectives. Have cases overlap, pass one another (and key evidence) on the street, even face off during a poker game using one anothers Stats. In the case of a tie in PvP, the one with the most successes (or close to them) gets what they want from the other, though the one being grilled doesn't have to be fully forthcoming or happy about it. There will be more information for the Guide on pages 11-12 on how to run this style of play.

TYPES OF NOIR AND MEDIA RECOMMENDATIONS
Trad/Classic Noir and Neo Noir.
Trad/Classic Noir is the image that first comes to mind when you hear Noir. Grayscale, rain-slicked streets, long shadows, bright lights, dangerous women and men stumbling their way into trouble. This type of Noir is notoriously hard to define, almost no detail is universally agreed on, but you’ll know it’s a classic Noir when you see it. Classic Noirs were wartime and postwar stories of moral decline, people digging their own graves, and falling for temptations. Not always about detectives and the women they fall for – some were about criminals on the run, men blamed for things they never did, loves gone wrong, list goes on.

Neo-noir is often a reinterpretation of a post-1959 noir era. Themes from trad noir can be the same or similar in Neo-noir while also grappling with the modern day aspects. Their contemporary settings and more familiar themes to the audience of today (such as tech, neon, and more). Such films include Blue Velvet, Devil in a Blue Dress, Taxi Driver, Gatacca, Fallen, A History of Violence, Videodrome, Lust, Caution, The Parallax View, Drum, Ex Machina, The Handmaiden, Miss Bala, Rojo, Vikram Vedha, Abang Adik, Decision to Leave, Love Lies Bleeding, The Big Lebowski, Disco Elysium, and the Blade Runner Series to name a few. Things can be strange and a little out there with Neo-noir, but this is a space where that style of storytelling is allowed to run, bruise, and get back up again.

If you are wondering why some games are taking longer than usual to run on my end it’s because of climate change. The air looks like fog and smells like timber. To people younger than me: THIS IS NOT NORMAL!
