genartclub.com was gone. It's back! 🎉 The domain lapsed a few months ago and took the site down with it. I bought it back yesterday and rebuilt the whole thing from the last Internet Archive capture, with the club's blessing. www.genartclub.com

I've been working on a new shader language called "easl". The goal is to bring the conveniences you'd expect from a high-level language to the GPU. It's still got some rough edges, but if you're into shaders or creative coding you should check it out! More info in the thread 👇

Back to making #DigitalArt in #JuliaLang #CreativeCoding #AbstractArt #Art
Two large yellow-ish blobs that look as though they were scraped down a canvas with a trowel are alongside a series of rough lines on the right side of the image. The lines have a slight slant, and are a brown color. Near the bottom of each line it begins to wander and wiggle, only to straighten out as it continues downward.

Finally got around to building my KLOR keyboard, and I have to say I'm really loving it so far! 🎉 #MechanicalKeyboard #DIY #keyboard
A KLOR 36 key mechanical keyboard. Black case with white and gray keycaps. It's split into two halves, and these halves are joined by a silver cable with brass plugs.

Completed this painting recently. I've transitioned to a mode of art making where I create computer algorithms that generate images, which I then paint by hand. I find mapping rigid computer-based processes to the messy real world to be extremely satisfying. #Art #Artist #Painting #AcrylicPainting

Made some "art trading cards" for an upcoming end-of-term art club party at my local community college (where I've been taking painting classes). Looking forward to seeing what other folks bring - I'm the only person making such aggressively abstract work. 😅 #PenPlotter #CreativeCoding #Art
A bamboo desk with five small works of art on them, each 63mm x 88mm. They are in black and yellow, and the artwork is abstract line work based on a recursive algorithm that subdivides space in a regular way. The results are reminiscent of technical drawings. There are three Rotring Isograph pens on the left side of the trading cards, and two bottles of ink above them.

I spent yesterday plotting this very detailed image. Regular paper didn't hold up to the image's many overlapping strokes unless I used a ballpoint, which shed ink in a distracting way. In the end, Yupo paper provided the best result. Amazing detail/tonal gradation. 🔥 #PenPlotter #CreativeCoding
A photo of a pen plot of a physics simulation gone wrong. There are many overlapping black lines that seem to move chaotically across the page, while darker regions seem to form an abstract pattern of loops and curves.

Another PCB test, this time with the detail turned up. 🔎 I've been trying to understand what draws me to this aesthetic, and I think it's because I find there to be a certain beauty in the complexity of modern technology, especially when mixed with an organic component. #CreativeCoding #GenArtClub
A generated image of a printed circuit board, with an organic complexity unlike normal PCBs.

For some reason today I decided to try to replicate the aesthetic of a printed circuit board. I have some vague ideas of how I might apply this in the future, but just getting it to this point was interesting. #GenArtClub #CreativeCoding
A digitally generated image that resembles a printed circuit board, with a dark green background, lighter green traces, and yellow contact points. There are many different traces that move from one side of the image the other, in a maze-like fashion.

Somewhat hilariously, my creative coding library didn't support triangles. It could draw rectangles, circles, and lines in HDR really, really fast. But not triangles. 😅 No longer! Today I read some OpenGL specs and added fast tris to the mix. 🎉 Small victories, lol. #GenArtClub #CreativeCoding
A complex set of larger triangles that are broken down into smaller triangles recursively. There are larger yellow triangles that contain many smaller light and dark gray triangles, all of which are separated by small bits of whitespace.

While I'm a fan of the messy lines that Bic ballpoints create, every so often I like to pull out my 0.2mm Rotring Isographs. Their immaculate ink flow and line consistency is incredible, and they excel at geometric abstractions like these. 9"x12" Bristol #CreativeCoding #GenArtClub #PenPlotter

A meandering line that moves in large strokes vertically, while slowly moving to the right. The line gains thickness as it moves to the right, and appears to be more and more stretched out as it approaches the right side of the image, as if it were smeared across a sheet of paper.

My experiments with unpredictable mediums continue. This image is a single line drawn with a Bic Cristal ballpoint. I greatly prefer the artifacts caused by this type of pen when creating these works. The less reliable, the better! #Art #PenPlotter #GenArtClub

Another experiment with oil-based ballpoint pens. Here I used a very small increment for each line, resulting in very slow progress and some interesting gradients as the ink accumulated in certain sections of the image. Plot time: ~30 hrs over 4 sessions #PenPlotter #CreativeCoding #GenArtClub
Blue ballpoint pen lines drawn very close to each other, creating the impression of dark and light gradients in a swirling, looping abstract composition.

A recent abstract geometric oil painting. In this case, I programmed a recursive algorithm to generate the overall structure, and then painted the result on 18"x24" ABS. The transformation from digital to physical via my own hands was deeply rewarding. #Art #Artist #OilPainting #GenArtClub
An abstract geometric oil painting that contains gray, light blue, and lime green rectangles against a dark blue background. The rectangles are filled in and form a repeating pattern with more rectangles the farther down the painting they move. On the right side is a series of small gray rectangles that are filled, with a series of black rectangular outlines that look like they have yet to be painted.

So begins the quinquennial (lol) process of building a new keyboard. 🤞that this one will be 'the one.' I thought I had an endgame keyboard last build, but I stupidly didn't use hotswap sockets for my switches, which are now failing. Building a KLOR this time, which seems perfect for me. #keyboard

What all of my time with my X-ACTO knife yesterday got me. 🎉 Recently I've been creating new algorithmic artworks with the goal of using the patterns as a basis for my oil paintings and learning a lot. I have so many ideas now, but I have to get this final project done first. 😅 More to come!
