I'm not the biggest EQ dork, but there's a feature of @getsoundly.bsky.social plugin that I really like. The "mix" knob isn't a wet/dry knob, rather it fades the band's PARAMETERS. Makes complex EQ fades possible with a single automation lane. Pretty neat, free: getsoundly.com/tools/

Quite enjoying this built in non-destructive spectral repair in the newer versions of #reaperdaw. One less thing I have to use RX for. Works for time selections and razor edits too. > Sample edits: Spectral repair sample values in time selection for all channels at mouse

Can't believe I never noticed the action called "File: Spawn new instance of REAPER". It just opens another window so that you can work on multiple projects (and copy-paste between them) in split-screen. Will make integrating pickups a lot faster. #reaperdaw

Genuinely flattered that the kind folk at Klankverbond put a picture of me babbling about sound design on their website. Klankverbond is a really unique org that supports independent audio folk in Belgium. If you're doing audio in Belgium, join them! www.klankverbond.be

I think Linear Phase EQ is kind of overhyped. But the one place i often use it is for checking my adjustments. Flip into linear mode for a moment to see if the high pass is negatively affecting the voice. Easy to hear it with the delta solo option in Reaper. You'll hear only what's changed.

I'm quite in love with this script that lets you absolutely break FX and synths in #reaperDAW by randomizing every knob at once. Script is called mpl_Randomize Track FX parameters Synth is Pendulate by Newfangled Audio

Ahh, looks like you've got a linear spectrogram. If you go into view-->Peak Display Settings, you can adjust the scale so it's logarithmic. Linear is good for high freq definition, and these log'd curves give better definition on the low freqs.

I think so. I think also the biggest gains from increasing FFT resolution is shown at low freqs. I forgot this earlier when I told you it might be a bug. I'm not more confident that this is just an inherent trade-off with spectrograms.

I've used quite a lot of cassette tape emulation plugins for #sounddesign and I'm coming to the conclusion that Spectral Audio's (now) free OSC-45 sounds the nicest of them all. Beautiful saturation and wow/flutter emulation. archive.org/details/ocs-...

"add option to move or not move take envelope points when moving media item contents" This is huge for sound design, where sometimes you want item envs to move with the content and sometimes you want them to stay put. Seen here with volume env, first with old behavior, then with new. (7/8)

"add actions to remove unnecessary points" Some editing workflows can lead to a lot of envelope points that are effectively doing nothing. A new custom action removes these points: "Envelope: Remove unnecessary points" Here I've made a button for it, but it's accessible in the actions list. (4/8)

Previously razor editing only worked for item envelopes (shown first with volume envs). Now, it also works for item envs (shown second with item pan envs). (3/8)

This is another big point in favor of FabFilter. I can just right click on a parameter and get it's envelope in Reaper. A small, but very appreciated addition.

Something that helps me when I'm mixing complex ambiences is Reaper's mode where a track can become a 2-D canvas with resizable blocks. This allows for fades that would otherwise be impossible. Right click a track in the track control panel and select "Free Item Positioning Mode" #ReaperDAW

So, here's what I do. I leave the ripple edge editing on all the time. And to adjust clip in and out points, I use the these two scripts from X-Raym that can contract OR extend clips based on mouse position. Ripple editing can be toggled on and off as needed, or by dragging top of clip vs bottom.

Jeff Emtman @jeffemtman.com · 26/03/2025
IDK if this helps, but you could toggle the option on and off with a doubleclick on the item edge. However, I've got a system set up that sidesteps this that I'll explain in next post.

This new feature for ripple editing on item edge in #reaperDAW 7.35 is pretty nice. I really wish it worked on the left edge too though.

Made a script for #reaperDAW that lets you select adjacent items. Helpful for me with #podcastediting, saving me from zooming in each time to grab a clump of clips. Sound on for my explanation. Feel free to download, edit, and share. drive.google.com/drive/folder...

Thanks Marco. I'd love to see your process as a screen recording if you're up for that. Best solution I've found so far is with the item take envelope, drawing a rough razor edit around the breath, and then using a custom action to fade it down.

For interviews recorded in stereo (and other field tape) I find this #reaperDAW script helpful: nofish_Normalize take pan (Loudness based).lua It pans the item so that left and right are equally loud. It is a quick way to put off-center voices in the middle.

The best change I've made to my editing process in the last year has been using #reaperdaw 's item loudness graphs. You can really quickly even out item's volumes (esp. dialog) just by watching the colors change as you edit the item volume envelope.

I've discovered the option: "View: Toggle show/hide item labels", which makes for an experience similar to the "distraction free modes" in other apps. Kind of calming when just working on arrangement. #reaperdaw

For me, being able to quickly identify what needs to be edited (and where) makes everything more efficient. I use the SWS auto-color tool in Reaper to automatically turn markers containing certain phrases a unique color (missing tape turns red, todos turn yellow, etc.) #reaperdaw

Oh interesting. I'm actually not quite sure what I do to avoid this. I'll need to think on this. I know I use the item locking sometimes to make more space in episodes. There's an important setting related to that which addresses part (but not all) of this, I think.
100
Jeff Emtman @jeffemtman.com · 12/04/2024
Do you know about the option "move envelope points with items"? This does that locking you're talking about. There's also an option to insert edge points too, so that if you're in the middle of a fade or whatnot, the envelopes' edges come with. That said, I also use item automation a lot.

For dialogue levelling, I do my first pass with Reaper's loudness based normalizing. Select items and run action "Item properties: Normalize items (peak/RMS/LUFS)..." In conjunction with the action "Item properties: Normalize items using most recent settings", it becomes quite powerful #reaperdaw
