I'm sure there are good reasons why retailers do this, but I'm so tired of getting a shipping email, clicking the link to check on the shipping status, and then having that link just be the middleman for the carrier. Just send me the tracking number, I'll get the info from the source!

Every inference call can be categorized as Initialization, Reasoning, Orchestration, or Synthesis. Initialization can be optimized but it's a small share of non-trivial tasks. Synthesis is sort of a fixed cost. So the big question is how to optimize your workloads for Reasoning Yield. Read more:

A functional taxonomy for LLM inference in agentic tasks
A framework for understanding where LLM inference goes during agentic tasks: Initialization, Reasoning, Orchestration, and Synthesis. Consider "Reasoning Yield" as a way to measure how much inference is spent resolving uncertainty rather than mechanically advancing already-determined execution.

Music Notes Are No Longer the Bottleneck (a thinkpiece published ca. 1600) For centuries, composers have been held back by an outdated assumption: that music requires notes. This made sense in the Dark Age era.
