Jeff Anderson @jefeja.bsky.social · 08/09/2026Wow - Mr. Kapper is a busy bee. He’s been peppering our faculty with similar requests all day today. Jeff Anderson @jefeja.bsky.social · 09/07/2026Wouldn’t be surprising if we eventually see a VAR review to determine whether a confrontation took place. 🤦 110
Jeff Anderson @jefeja.bsky.social · 09/07/2026Has to be in the context of a “confrontation” with an opposing player. Didn’t see anything resembling a confrontation. 110
Jeff Anderson @jefeja.bsky.social · 08/07/2026My mistake. I meant to id the teammate who appears to be talking to Messi. If that’s the sum, total of it, and the two of them are having a conversation at a distance from the rest of the scrum, the ref will not see that as a direct confrontation with an opponent. Not trying to be pedantic here. 000
Jeff Anderson @jefeja.bsky.social · 08/07/2026where's the confrontation between Messia and ??? I'm not suggesting there weren't harsh words, maybe even grossly inappropriate words, exchanged and that Messi may have said something awful. But a FIFA World Cup ref isn't going to pull out a red card in this situation, if this is it. He just isn't. 100
Jeff Anderson @jefeja.bsky.social · 08/07/2026it's a pity the camera focus is so tight on Messi. If Messi was talking to a teammate behind his hand, then there's no red card offense. The new rule specifies that the covered mouth offense occurs only in a confrontational situation with an opponent. I don't see an Egyptian player in the frame 200
Jeff Anderson @jefeja.bsky.social · 07/07/2026This time, though, the feeling is much worse. Despite all the surrounding static and the official bullying that preceded the start of the tournament, the vibe was especially promising this time, both on and off the field. And yet, here we are again, only much worse off. 3/ 000
Jeff Anderson @jefeja.bsky.social · 07/07/2026I always feel a small sense of loss when the US exits the World Cup — even though I know in my heart we’re not yet good enough to take it even most of the way, let alone all the way. Still, every occasion we seem to be getting better, and my hopes have risen along with. 2/ 100
Jeff Anderson @jefeja.bsky.social · 04/07/2026Excellent choice! Mine was meant more tongue in cheek, although I think there’s more in Dazed and Confused than the film gets credit for. 110

Jeff Anderson @jefeja.bsky.social · 02/07/2026The refs have been quite good in this World Cup. I wouldn’t claim to be an authority, but as someone who’s held the whistle, I’ve been impressed with how much they get right, even before VAR gets involved. 110

Jeff Anderson @jefeja.bsky.social · 26/06/2026And then the “conversation" went something like this: Jeff: That would all be great, but I have a question. How did you know about the Substack version of the piece? That’s not mentioned anywhere in the working paper. 4/6 110
Jeff Anderson @jefeja.bsky.social · 26/06/2026Gemini responded after a few seconds with a few possible lines of future development (nothing earth-shattering), and then said it would be happy to draft a concept proposal. It also offered to draft a shorter version for the Substack article that I and my co-author were planning to write. 3/6 100
Jeff Anderson @jefeja.bsky.social · 26/06/2026I first asked it to summarize the paper, which it did in about 10 seconds. Then I asked it if it had any suggestions about how to develop one of the arguments made toward the end of the paper. 2/6 100
