For our next co-op game, the wife and I have moved on to Lost Castle 2, which is a lot clunkier than the last two roguelite beat-em-ups we played but still quite a lot of fun. Not sure if it's because of our roguelite experience but this is a tad easier (we beat a run on our third try).

You don't need me to tell you that Forgotten Island is awesome (it is). You need me to tell you to GO WATCH IT NOW BEFORE IT LEAVES THEATERS (screenings are already so limited in KL and PJ). It's beautiful and funny and wondrous and joyous and easily one of the best movies this year.

Also I might have unwittingly purchased the deluxe edition because the game came with several alternate skins unlocked. I wasted no time giving Sargon the Warrior Within outfit.

Moving on from Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth to Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, a game I would say is made for me, being a big fan of the Sands of Time trilogy and Metroidvanias. I'm still sad from not getting a sequel to the 2008 Prince of Persia though.

Finally finished Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth. I had to abandon a few chapters' worth of side-content. There was a point where the game said "you're close to the end now, so here are MORE things to do in the open world" and I felt an exhaustion settle on my shoulders. I do love this game, though.

Watched both Hope and Resident Evil in the same week and both are terrific (and terrifyingly) fun creature-features that thrive on putting normal people in extraordinary circumstances and breaking the tension with human moments of humor. Two gonzo, stunning works with strong creator vision.

Some of my foundational manga. Can't say they changed my life (except maybe Doraemon), but they're among my favorite works, and most of them greatly expanded my interest in manga and fiction, and the types of stories I love.
My 9Koma manga selection. They include: Dragon Quest: The Adventures of Dai, Doraemon, Vinland Saga, 20th Century Boys, Berserk, Goodnight Punpun, Blank Canvas: My So-Called Artists Adventure, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Yuria-Sensei to Akai Ito

The wife and I finally beat the final Absolum boss, which goes to show that the most powerful thing in this game is money. We practically bought our way to victory.

The End of Oak Street is the Jurassic World sequel that the studios were too cowardly to make. Just a great thrill-ride full of tense set-pieces mixed in with family drama, plus commentary on American suburbia that I can't fully grasp. Also darkly funny and kinda mean (in a good way).

Weekends where we have a bit more time on our hands mean catching up on long-as-heck movies. This time it's Martin Scorsese's The Aviator, an intriguing film about a mad dreamer who is also mostly terrible, made exceptional by the same system that breaks him. A good watch.

My wife got a Pantasy Moomin House set for her birthday and we started putting it together this weekend. It was fun! Though we'll probably take a few more weekends to complete it.

Through a combination of having some really good rituals and trinkets plus some luck and my wife coming in clutch, we beat our first Absolum run! Of course, there's still more to do, including a whole area we didn't complete, the true final boss, and other secrets to unlock. What a great game!

Watched The Invite, the odd film that was both intense and claustrophobic (for me, perhaps) yet really funny. Spent the film flitting between stressed and laughing out loud. Great use of its limited space, too - a close-quartered house that can visually indicate the gaping space between people.

Some additional work thing took more of my chill time but I did get to fold wantan with the wife for dinner, and afterwards I drew this picture of two women I saw while waiting at the vet with my dog. I felt bit more recharged.

The wife and I have just started on Absolum, and it's very apparent that our previous two rogue-like beat-em-ups were relatively easy. We got our asses kicked. There's a nifty difficulty setting that lets each co-op player adjust their difficulty, so we can tailor the game to our own preferences.

I quite enjoyed Brand New Day, which is a testament that any good Spider-Man movie needs 1) New York to be the backdrop, 2) Peter Parker to be miserable, and 3) an awkward elevator ride.

The Life of Chuck and Merrily We Roll Along (2025) are both told in reverse chronology, with different effects. In Merrily, the tragedy is heightened with each past decision you eventually learn about. In Life of Chuck, it's more heartwarming, bittersweet, and unexpectedly hopeful.

This was unintentional, but we've recently been watching movies that ended up being companion films thematically or structurally. Both Avatar Aang and Supergirl deal with heroes who have to come to terms with the eradication of their people and culture - how to move on, and what to uphold.

The wife and I have "beaten" Rotwood. That is, we rolled credits, though there are of course the post-game, hardest versions of the bosses to beat -- which is how you also attain weapons imbued with the bosses' powers (quite OP). We'll probably try beating these bosses before moving on.

Am glad that I got to catch Hirokazu Koreeda's Sheep in the Box, which dropped in the midst of The Odyssey and the new Spider-Man. Probably his most sentimental film, more direct in his messaging, but just as warm and empathetic as it explores the intersection of parenting and being.

Didn't expect to be hit this hard by Episode 2 of Draw This, Then Die!. Making art is hard. Making art for a living is even harder. But there's one point in time when making art was such a beautiful, joyous, pure, innocent thing for everyone, and this anime captured that so well.

Celebrated a friend's birthday at a board game cafe. We tried Kaki Lima, which is a truly beautiful game about appreciating the five-foot pedestrian walkways in front of Malaysian shoplots, though our dumb asses took quite a while to grasp the mechanics of the game. The art is terrific!

Been playing Rotwood with the wife, and it's a fun co-op roguelite beat-em-up that's fun to play and has truly delightful art and animation. Very accessible, nothing particularly complex in systems, and just about difficult enough to be challenging but not frustrating.

I liked it at first because it's rare to find a musical sequence set during a fight scene, but it turns out that "change" is the core theme of the entire show, culminating in this song. Also, this shot is magnificent.

And I really admire how Steven Universe Future (the epilogue series) focuses on the trauma a kid hero would face. Happily ever after doesn't mean the automatic disappearance of pain and heartache. That Steven's body couldn't even deal with minor threats without treating them as major really hit me.

Steven subverts a lot of the boy hero archetype. His power set focuses on protection and healing. His primary conflict resolution strategy is communication. He brings empathy and kindness to (most) of every scenario. But it doesn't always work. It is, however, always important for Steven to try.

Finished Steven Universe, marking the completion of a journey from 10 years ago, when episodes got hard to find. It's still really darn good - a series subverting and deconstructing kid hero tropes while embracing a kind, empathetic approach to conflict resolution.

The wife and I just started on REANIMAL. We're enjoying it (except for a few sections where we got stuck because the camera obscured the next path), though I probably should've waited and gotten it for the PS5. It runs okay on the Steam Deck, but sometimes the framerate nosedives.

Post a cartoon you remember that (you think) no one else remembers. For a long time, I thought the dark, serious, depressing show about animals making a perilous journey to find a new home was either a fever-pitched dream or my own childhood delusions. Turns out it was a real British trauma-fest.

The wife and I have started playing TMNT: Splintered Fate, which I'll list among our fave couch co-op roguelikes. I think other titles have more complex mechanics and combat options, but it's still lots of fun with its own charm. If anything, they really captured the TMNT cheese and charm.

I think Sam Raimi can be forgiven for every Multiverse of Madness if we get one Send Help in return. Wickedly fun and funny, angry yet mischievous and devious, it's a good, gory, goopy time anchored by Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien making you feel bad for rooting for them in every turn.

Simple yet gentle and tender, Every Day A Good Day is an understated contemplation of rituals, craft and art, and how they let us embrace and appreciate the beauty of life and the world around us. It is, I feel, an ode to teaching and learning, a lifelong journey that yields more than the craft.

I'm don't quite know what to think or feel about Honey Don't!, except that it's a detective yarn that unspools into random threads and unsatisfactory payoffs -- and maybe that's the point? But why? I'm not sure. But Margaret Qualley is cool, and I rather enjoyed the film.

The Oiwa House's odd-ish design makes a lot of sense once you learn that Uncle Oiwa was a carpenter. Everything was likely made by him, and so much of it is naturally sourced wood. I especially love the post box here.

The Oiwa House in When Marnie Was There would be my dream house (the view!) but I think it would also be a nightmare to upkeep and maintain (especially for someone like me, who can't even assemble a bed properly).

Baby Assassins have always been a satire of the Gen Z work experience (albeit with guns), and Everyday! doubles down on the premise, whether it's dealing with boomer vanity projects, cruel colleagues, or toxic work environments. Funny, smart, heartwarming, and cathartic.
