‘chef’ (2014) is such a perfect time capsule for how good and legitimately useful social media used to be

AI: here is what you’d look like in a stolen art style 💩 TV writers this month: here are four hour-long oners deconstructing masculinity in the digital age, a meta-satire of oners, whip-pans, and bookends which uses all three, and a season finale with ethical conundrums and a marching band ✏️🔥

opening every social media app and seeing everyone posting ghibli rip-off selfies from the new chatgpt
A two-panel meme format featuring a bus driver from The Simpsons saying “don’t make me tap the sign,” with the sign replaced with a still from an interview with Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki saying “I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself” in response to being shown a prototype of AI-generated animation.

having the time of my life at a birthday party in a restaurant where the music is playing from a spotify jam (alt, indie, disco, etc.) and the TV is showing norteño/corrido videos on mute, and we’re cheering every time the vibe or beat of the song matches with the aesthetic or cuts of the videos

believe the hype re: ‘adolescence’ on netflix. 10/10 miniseries. fits into the ‘black mirror’ box as a cautionary tale about the influence of the internet on kids’ minds. astounding acting. and all four episodes being shot with ZERO cuts (not even hidden) isn’t just a gimmick — it MAKES the show.

it’s time for us to do away with ‘compartmentalise’ and ‘classify’ and other such frivolous synonyms, and just roll with ‘pigeonhole’ for everything

just mistyped ‘acquainted’ as ‘aquatained’ and it got me thinking: ‘aqua-tainer’ would be a sick name for a water bottle searched it and, alas, there’s already a camping brand with such a product which begs the question: did the product come first, or were they inspired after making the same typo

good morning to everyone except the cinemex rebrand
The old Cinemex logo. A vibrantly-coloured film strip coiling around to create a spherical globe shape. The ‘Cinemex’ wordmark is curvy and slanted, and the tagline beneath says ‘la magia del cine’ — ‘the magic of cinema’.The new Cinemex logo. A thick line forms a spring-like shape that looks sort of like the letter ‘L’ written in lower-case cursive, intended to form the same spherical globe as the old Cinemex logo. The updated ‘Cinemex’ wordmark is still quite heavy, but far less curvy, and no longer italicised. The tagline is removed.

extremely cool branding/copywriting/cinema/geography thing: a movie theatre that sits on the US/canada border just got a rebrand (by montreal studio ‘harrison fun’), with the tagline: ‘the only cinema in the USA without a screen’ because the seats are in the US, but the screen is canada perfect
Mock-ups of posters for movie screenings (the films are ‘Talk To Me’, ‘Oppenheimer’, and ‘Poor Things’) at the cinema Haskell, which feature pastel colour backgrounds, stills from the movies framed in a large, thick, serif ‘H’, and date/time details in smaller typography. The posters are mocked up on outdoor displays in a snowy area. A bird is sat upon one of the displays. An outdoor billboard for the cinema Haskell, featuring the tagline: ‘the only cinema in the USA without a screen’, and then, in French, the inverse tagline: ‘the only cinema in Canada without a projector’. The typography is set in black against a pastel pink background, and framed by a thick, wide, serif ‘H’.A photo of the inside of the Haskell cinema, showing the new Haskell wordmark and ornamental brand elements on a screen housed within an ornate proscenium. the title card for ‘wicked’, interestingly, eschews the logo that’s been used in all of the marketing (which is based on the logo for the stage musical) in favour of a title treatment that nods to the title card of ‘the wizard of oz’ (1939)
The logo for the 2024 movie ‘Wicked’ which has appeared in all of the marketing for the film: tall, sharp, slightly gothic typography with a pink-to-green gradient fading from left to right. The title card that appears a the beginning of the 2024 movie ‘Wicked’: slanted, curvy, fanciful typography with a hand-scripted appearance and ornamental flourishes for the serifs of each character, and the subhead ‘Part 1’ below.

cookies actually expand based on the size of the vessel you serve hot chocolate in. cookies evolved this defence mechanism to avoid being dunked in hot beverages. if you serve your hot chocolate in a wide bowl, your cookie will grow to the size of a house. irksome, but makes the cookie last longer.

Worrying that big companies will replace you with AI is real and genuine, but I don't hear enough about the current way I'm mostly seeing it. The great unique small jobs doing work for local restaurants or upstart youtubers have all dried up because they're ALL using AI now.
