the story was notable to me because nobody made the connection of what happened. they all thought it was just an inscrutable encounter with strange details.

i heard an alien encounter story that describes exactly this, but was from years ago when basic ML wasn't a thing, but which goes the other way, visitors who attempted to camouflage as humans so they wore average human faces. which backfired since the average face is a superstimulus.

cerebras is suffering from serious lack of memory, probably owed to the fact that they started when the current shape of AI was unknowable. maybe they can find a workaround, and speed has its uses, but they're limited to rather niche uses

regularly wonder about this alternate timeline of open social media, probably harder than email as mob media demands stricter real-time delivery, but doable. however leaving messenger apps as siloed as they are feels way less justified.

I was reading an author recently talking about how we don't appreciate the way that email isn't siloed. That is, you don't have to be in gmail to talk to someone else in gmail. The norm is so powerful, it'd be unthinkable to change it. All email is interoperable. Social media could've been this way.

"well integrity is currently a bigger concern than cavern integrity due to aging, breaking, and single-entry wells. ...the number and frequency of subsurface well deformations and failures were outpacing the program’s ability at current resource levels to maintain storage and drawdown capacity."

crude oil from the SPR is withdrawn by pumping water into salt caverns, the oil floats on top. this dissolves salt from the walls and enlarges the volume, until the walls are too thin. how many of the original 5 full cycles (theoretically up to 90% withdrawal) are left differs btw caverns
"The SPR caverns that were built by DOE were designed to be geomechanically stable for up to five full drawdowns. Repeated partial drawdowns followed by refill can leach a single part of a cavern repeatedly, leading to undesirable shapes. After Congress directed DOE to begin conducting regular non-emergency mandated sales from the SPR starting in 2017 to help manage the federal budget, DOE tasked Sandia to provide a yearly update on the number of drawdowns each cavern had remaining since the caverns were being used regularly to withdraw crude oil. In May 2025, Sandia reported that the majority of the SPR’s caverns (47 of 60—about 78 percent) had at least four remaining available drawdowns as of the end of calendar year 2024, and all but one cavern had at least one remaining available drawdown.[28]

In its assessment of the impact of the 2022 drawdown, Sandia found that it impacted the SPR’s caverns in the expected way (e.g., expended drawdowns and cavern volume increase) and left the majority of the caverns in very good condition. Further, Sandia experts told us that the large-scale 2022 drawdown improved the shape of some caverns (e.g., by removing some salt bridges) that had only experienced partial drawdowns before then. However, every drawdown cycle expands cavern volume and reduces the spacing between caverns within the salt dome, which ultimately reduces their long-term viability.

Some SPR caverns have potential issues that Sandia has identified and is actively monitoring. Most notably, at Bayou Choctaw, three of the six caverns have only one expected remaining drawdown available and two may have developed a pathway between them that could limit their safe use. DOE told us it is currently working on potential chemical and engineering solutions to move oil in and out of these caverns safely. In addition, the other three caverns with five expected drawdowns available may be negatively impacted by the... " https://files.gao.gov/reports/GAO-26-106918/index.html

'contrafactual' seems to be a legit but rarely used alternative to 'counterfactual' and etymologically a more direct use of the latin origin than the anglicized 'counter'. but it sounds like a mistake a non-native english speaker would make.

not caring as in both consumers and firms, not necessarily poor people but like having a cheap throwaway phone or throwaway anything as backup, for risky uses, whatnot. what if the tradeoff is structural impairment (air/water-tightness), so devices break earlier rendering the battery part obsolete
000
_jeanleon @jean-leon.bsky.social · 04/06/2026
there is this tendency of the EU in particular thinking it is a "regulatory superpower" that firms will just follow, but especially for very cheap items many will just not care. and there always tradeoffs, especially at the cheaper end where already so much is optimized for cost.

...what if battery tech becomes so strange that replacement becomes unfeasible (structural batteries), or just demands of extreme compactness/robustness (or is this only applying to consumer tech.
