What is a good book for an interested layperson who wants to know »how computers actually work« (asking for a friend)?

Learning from Beauvoir's autobiography that Laurent Schwartz was a prominent figure of the French radical left. (I guess it's not a secret, I just happened to not know about it.)

I feel like it's important to emphasize that this is not about math. These people are on their way to destroy everything you love and care about, within but mostly outside of mathematics. Even if you might have a permanent position which might secure you financially for your future, you will […]

@tomkalei @arXiv I think this question should be answered by analyzing the amount of joy among mathematicians coming from practicing mathematics, over the last couple of years.

Very excited that a 4th edition of Bryant-O'Hallaron's *Computer Systems: A Programmer's Perspective* is planned for next year. I really like the book, but it feels a little bit dated. csappbook.blogspot.com/2026/06/the-…

The 4th Edition is in the Works
We’re pleased to announce that the fourth edition of Computer Systems: A Programmer’s Perspective is in the works. We’re busy updating the text right now. The book should be available in the Spring of 2027. Overall, we do not anticipate major changes in coverage. Over the past decade, many changes have occurred to GCC, as well as to memory and processor technology. We will refresh the material and bring the presentation up to date. We will also be adding Brian P. Railing as a third author. See our separate post about him.
