He was one of only a small minority of congressmen to serve in the military. In 1777, he then joined the Delaware militia as a private, the only leading figure to serve at that level. #patriotism 020

The world should believe we were united, even if we were not. So Dickinson avoided the State House on that day, abstaining from the vote. 110
