Something that I think we need to be clear about is that internet scholars (critical and otherwise) have made this clear for at least two decades and the rest of the academy (and the public) responded with a collective "what happens online isn't real," so forgive me if I'm like "water is ALSO wet."

Seems like there's a lot of chatter among folks looking to migrate off of bsky.social as a PDS, and out to other options. Friendly reminder for white people like me, that Blacksky is for Black folks. There's a related PDS for people that aren't Black too, but Blacksky isn't for us white people.

Like I said ... Think twice before you amplify thinly-source stories. Even if you're expressing skepticism, you don't want to give them more oxygen. One alternative: take a screenshot and draw a couple of big red question marks over it. Or, just don't amplify it!

Yeah, I feel differently about whether Bluesky is decentralized (i can see arguments both ways, it basically depends on what aspects people focus on and how you define "Bluesky") as oppose to whether the ATmosphere is decentralized (clearly yes, Blacksky's existence is proof)

i don't think most understand how big this is. currently, bsky forks do not give selfhosted PDSes the ability to use 2FA which leave users unprotected from brute force attacks; the fix below stops those attacks it also stops me from rotating my password every 120hrs to a new randomized password 🫠

And similarly fedi could well evolve to include some AT Proto-ish elements -- Fediscovery/FASP and AcitivityPodss are steps in that direction. I think of the architectures more as duals, but like I say I agree that looking at the similarities (as well as mappings) can also be very useful!

Jon P (moved) @jdp23-alt.bsky.social · 03/09/2025
AT Proto is also flexible enough that it can handle different topologies, and I think as it evolves we'll see more constructs like partial-network Relays and PDSs that limit what AppViews can access them. So despite the architectural differences it may well evolve in a more fedi-like direction....

That's true, but I don't think that's the sense in which either Christine is using "message passing".
000
Jon P (moved) @jdp23-alt.bsky.social · 03/09/2025
Christine's talking about a message being addressed and the delivered directly to recipients. A PDS broadcast the post to all the Relays that crawl it who then rebroadcast it to all the AppViews who subscribe to the Relay's firehose, then the AppViews figure out who to deliver it to.

Jon P (moved) @jdp23-alt.bsky.social · 03/09/2025
I agree that you can map one to the other, and that can be useful, but it also elides these important differences. AT Proto's optimized for building large all-public social networks; ActivityPub is incredibly flexible, supporting all kinds of topologies, but not great at the large all-public case

One of the places Christine and Bryan were very much in agreement was that the architectures are very different: ActivityPub based on message-passing, AT Protocol on a shared-heap architecture. Here's an excerpt from whtwnd.com/bnewbold.net...
Christine makes the distinction between "message passing" systems (email, XMPP, and ActivityPub) and "shared heap" systems (atproto). Yes! They are very different in architecture, which will likely have big impacts on outcomes and network structure. Differences like this make "VHS versus BetaMax" analogies inaccurate.

The "shared heap" concept goes deeper than just the relay and AppView network roles. atproto is a global self-authenticating network: a single gigantic heap. Accounts have global identifiers (DIDs), which they use to publicly publish data (repos and records). That data is published into an intertwingled ocean of public graph data: records with AT-URI references to other records. Applications are indexes or "views" of that global data graph. Details like the firehose and relay are simply mechanisms for accessing and synchronizing this public graph data. Other data transfer mechanisms, such as batched backfill, or routed delivery of events (closer to "message passing") are possible and likely to emerge. But the "huge public heap" concept is pretty baked-in.

Jon P (moved) @jdp23-alt.bsky.social · 03/09/2025
AT Proto Relays aggregate PDS firehose event streams, which aren't addressed to specific recipients. So I see these as very different than message passing in the ActivityPub sense, which Christine described as "A message is addressed, and then delivered to recipients."

Something I didn't get to say yesterday: We heard over and over during the event about "human-centered" approaches to "AI". But if refusal is not on the table (at every level: individual students and teachers right up through UNESCO) then we have in fact centered the technology, not the people.

Today's architecture is message passing, making copies of posts and sending them to other instances -- where they may have different properties. If you edit or delete a post, that doesn't necessarily update or delete the copies. Incompatibilities between software lead to inconsistencies.
110
Jon P (moved) @jdp23-alt.bsky.social · 03/09/2025
And I also agree that you can look at multiple independent databases as a single database where queries give inconsistent results due to lossy replication. I still don't think that's a good way to understand the current ActivityPub Fediverse's behavior though.
100
Jon P (moved) @jdp23-alt.bsky.social · 03/09/2025
Agreed that the AT Protocol network will fragment (at least to some extent) as it grows. and private data also may is also going to add complexities. That said (if I understand it correctly), the content-addressable approach is likely to means it's still conceptually more like a single database.
