The timing and potency of the message of the life and funeral of Jimmy Carter as we anticipate the arrival of the new administration is deeply powerful. His grandson's commentary on Carter's identification of the growth of inequality as the biggest problem the world faces was particularly apt.

One bad Trump thing is not a distraction from another bad Trump thing. The cacophony of multiple bad Trump things at once is one single thing. It is not possible to get everyone to focus on one part of that chaos, since all the bad parts are bad enough to merit attention, and the chaos is the thing.

It’s just a total systemic and willful failure that the people with the greatest power in the country are held to the lowest standards. That’s exactly opposite how it should be.

Jimmy Carter was a Christian politician who actually sought to model the teachings of Christ even after leaving politics, rather than using Christianity as a political bludgeon against his opponents or as a tool of supremacy in the godforsaken "culture wars."

@djrothkopf.bsky.social uh, no. Deliberately mishandling classified information is inexcusable regardless of intent. And, like the Hunter Biden pardon, would set a dangerous precedent. Would spur others (on both sides!) to act with political intent with classified docs.

Amid the backdrop that more than a dozen members of Trump's Cabinet are billionaires, a reminder that this is what happened to income inequality in this country once the tax rate for top earners was slashed after 1980. Trickle down does not work and top earners' priority is themselves.

If a deal is dodgy when a D president’s kid does it, it’s dodgy when an R president’s kid does it, too. This includes many of Hunter Biden’s sketchy transactions that the GOP has amplified & investigated—and also Don Jr/Eric's crypto project, the Saudis "investing" $2B with Jared Kushner, etc.

Good point. I still don’t like it, but that framing makes it more palatable. Unfortunately your argument likely will only resonate with those who view it as persecution and not a legitimate use of gov resources.

And now Trump and his followers have more pretext for whataboutism regardless of how ridiculously false the equivalence is. The standard isn’t fair—but Biden of all people should know that by now.

I’d encourage everyone to apply neutral standards. The left shouldn’t look at the rest of Biden’s term and after as anything goes because of what the new administration might do. A blanket pardon for ten years for your son is not good optics, precedent, nor the most just use of the power.
