To close: it's crazy to worry about profit motive in author COI declarations, but not journal editing itself. The damage this was causing was apparent before AI. The power to enact change lies with funders. Funders can use the same mechanisms they already use to support non-profit journals. 14/14

Gotta love the cops response in this: “drivers need to check their surroundings”, ignoring the fact that the design of the cars makes this increasingly difficult to do, and pedestrians need to not cross the road except at small and infrequent crossings that privilege tragic flow over safety. Nice 👍

Big Four consulting firm Deloitte has been handed a $2.1m contract to provide “management advisory services” to the Illicit Tobacco and E-Cigarette (ITEC) Commissioner despite a decades-long relationship with the tobacco industry. New from me for @deepcutnews.bsky.social.

I tend to agree. Too quiet. Too timid. Hanson just shouts whatever stupid shit pops into her head and the media lap it up as though it’s important or valuable. The greens need to be loud by picking some fights. Who knows? Maybe it might inspire ALP to start doing something brave too

House prices are falling in Australia. That’s a good thing – if you believe housing is a basic human need | Saul Eslake
Labor’s budget changes are not to blame for the recent dip in property prices. But the changes will help move housing away from investors – and that should be celebrated House prices in Sydney and Melbourne are down by 3.1% and 3.5% respectively, from their most recent peaks, according to the latest data from Cotality. Across Australia as a whole, house prices didn’t rise last month, the first time that has happened since January 2023. And the annual rate of house price inflation dropped to 9.5% from a most recent peak of 10.9% over the year to February. If these reports were about any of the other 86 classes of goods and services into which Australia’s consumer price index is divided, they would be greeted with universal approbation, and the government would be claiming credit for “easing cost-of-living pressures”.
