Honestly I would love nothing more than GPS limiters for vehicles. That is my very unpopular opinion.

J Dirom @jdirom.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
If that is the case then it makes these laws even more asinine.

I just don’t like that it will turn people off e-bikes as transportation with additional liability insurance. I just have to worry about $400 speeding tickets, as will be a while before I get one, but it has been something my better half has been looking at for a while.

J Dirom @jdirom.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Do you mind me asking what that costs? I suspect if this is a thing it will require theft and liability.
110
J Dirom @jdirom.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
The problem with insurance is that it is a racket. Why should someone have to pay, so they have coverage to a certain level of liability? Why make it illegal to ride if can self-cover? It is silly because and e-bike limited to 30km is slow in my world.
110
J Dirom @jdirom.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Seems the insurance though is for “power bicycles” that are to be used on roadways and pathways. I just seems ridiculous. Honestly, the vast majority of people I see on them are older.

J Dirom @jdirom.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
I am curious people’s thoughts on what is being said in the new Rick Bell article, eluding that people are going to have to insure their e-bikes in Alberta with legislation coming shortly. #yycbike

Great weekend racing C2 in Canmore this past weekend. Been a ton of fun this past month. #yycbike

Likely. I suspect incidents are more related to volume of on road riding more than anything. That or where they are intersections to existing infrastructure (heavy use pathways) that get spat out in weird places.

Appears the answer is no.

Map has been updated to reflect incidents for August. While I am happy to see a reduction for August, it has still been a horrible year as we have had a 173% increase over 2025. Stay safe #yycbike www.google.com/maps/d/viewe...

Would be better served if it was MUP on a Saturday at noon versus 1:30am on streets in a community. Probably better at 1:30am to be dealing with the tuner boys on Stoney and their “race nights”.

Still a very expensive endeavour to have three kids do some community service hours.

The Hawcs portion of the the story is absolutely ridiculous.

I’m all for enforcement, but I will say that a likely $10,000 Hawcs flight to nab kids riding electric motorcycles is ridiculous. I mean that is not how to spend money on the youth of today. #yycbike www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

J Dirom @jdirom.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Yeah. Without a doubt I was going too fast for a multi-use pathway. However, I was in a designated bike lane. Also despite the ticket being for the “Plaza”, I would argue I wasn’t as in the Plaza there is no bike lane as it ends. We will see how it plays out. Initially was just going to pay.
020
J Dirom @jdirom.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
It is not busy at all in the mornings on a weekday. Usually if am am through there after 12:30 it is a bit busier with the lunch joggers.
010
J Dirom @jdirom.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
100% the plaza itself, especially on a weekend is a slow down and coast section, until we resume by Fort Calgary. They said they clocked me something like 136m from the yellow beach umbrellas. Probably just assume you are blasting all the way through the core, which I get.
000
J Dirom @jdirom.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
My question is why they are so concerned with that stretch of separated bike lane. Especially on a weekday.

J Dirom @jdirom.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
It’s a good question, because most people don’t. Even myself I don’t have speed, just my time riding and heart rate, and to be frank I seldom look at it, because riding you have way more things to pay attention to.
010
J Dirom @jdirom.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
That is wild that they would warn you to slow down for 2km over. Most people don’t have speed on their bikes, and I am fairly confident the vast majority of people on the most leisurely of rides are above that speed. At least better for my $405 fail to stop because I did a track stand at a stop sign
150
J Dirom @jdirom.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
I would say it is the force that kills which is amplified by the weight. Thing is this is a separated lane for bikes, not a multi-use pathway.
010
J Dirom @jdirom.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Honestly I was going to pay, I have no issue with it. But then when people make assumptions… bsky.app/profile/jdir...
010
J Dirom @jdirom.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
The general area…lol. But thanks for pointing it out. I was ready to pay the fine, but now looking at it, I was in a designated cycling lane, not shared pathway. This will get thrown out.
090
J Dirom @jdirom.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
“High Traffic”, without knowing where the ticket was issued. It isn’t deflection at all, simply pointing out that fines are not proportional compared to cars. Just like the $81 ticket for not having a bell that isn’t an actual bell. I accept my responsibilities as it stands.
150
J Dirom @jdirom.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Ironically, I do speed through residential neighborhoods on the bike (I am a very bad man), the fine doesn’t even compare, and nobody cares if someone passes in those situations because, well, I am a bike.

J Dirom @jdirom.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
I agree the polite “on you left” honestly works better in my opinion.

Enforcement is being ramped up. Which to be honest I have no issue with. Just be aware. Just wish they would do the same for roads, especially given the increase in incidents.
0130
J Dirom @jdirom.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Just a reminder it is cheaper to go 30km an hour over the limit in a residential neighbourhood ($324) in a jacked up F-150, than it is to go too fast on the pathway on a bike. Also seems that a bell on a head unit is not a bell, or so I am told. I accept responsibility for my sins. #yycbike

July now has the most incidents so far this year of cyclists getting hit in the city. With the province “looking for feedback” (negative only) on bike lanes it isn’t going to approve. Make sure your voice is heard! #yycbike www.google.com/maps/d/viewe...

The thing is with that is that the entire body of information can be requested under ATIA. So they can’t just make that claim without risking total exposure. That being said the whole this stripe for abuse by bots and angry people who can easily look up lanes and complain. All done in bad faith.
