This was a necessary palate cleanser after reading the Foreign Affairs piece in which a former VP of Apple and head of the Pentagon's Defense Innovation Unit waxes poetically about the need for "patriotic tech warriors" and argues that "fierce, Darwinian competition is both inevitable and healthy."

To sum things up, we’re trying to run a planetary society that needs to solarpunk the fuck out of itself in a hurry on the collective intelligence of an 18th century principality that’s heard of the Enlightenment from some guy at the pub. Succeeding with increased complexity is beneficial — in fact our climate carelessness has put us in a position in which failing to increase cooperation is an existential threat — but requires increased collective intelligence. However, much of the infrastructure we have which sustained our collective intelligence has been thrown into disarray at a time when it was already barely coping. The stakes therefore are to either develop the institutional capacity for transnational, post-geographic governance or to face extinction-class, or at least civilisation-ending, catastrophic collapse.

Well. Hey. No pressure. But we might want to not fuck this one up.

Pleasantly surprised to see Montenegro not jump at the opportunity to dog pile on Spain to appease the far right.

Portugal and France, which did not sign the letter, announced the strengthening of border controls with Spain. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez added that there was "absolutely no question" of Spain leaving the Schengen Area.

The Portuguese Prime Minister, Luis Montenegro, also stated that there was "no reason to take a measure to suspend the rules of the Schengen area, but there were reasons to strengthen the presence of law enforcement at the borders."

Luxembourg and Ireland also did not sign the letter.

Which EU countries have signed the letter calling for a stronger response?

The leaders of 22 EU countries called for a coordinated response to the situation.

In a letter to top EU officials, released Saturday by the Danish prime minister's office, the countries asked the EU's current Irish presidency to urgently convene a videoconference of interior ministers.

"We cannot allow uncontrolled mass crossings, the instrumentalization of migration or other hybrid threats to create the perception that illegal entry into the European Union is possible. That a migrant's illegal entry can turn into legal stay," the letter said.

"Such a perception would encourage further attempts, undermine confidence in our common migration policy and have repercussions for all Member States."

Leaders of Italy, Denmark, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia and Sweden signed the letter.

Those heading back said that they had initially been drawn ⁠by viral social-media videos and messages from friends suggesting that the heavily guarded border could be breached.

But after reaching Ceuta, many said they found no way to continue onwards to mainland Spain.

"We came to make progress, not to be fooled," said Brahim, a bakery worker from Fez who left his job and crossed the border after watching clips of thousands doing the same. "I thought I'd build a better future there. But I was surprised in Ceuta."

I had to learn about animal law in Portugal today for the worst reasons. Anyhow, here's my sweet, elderly, blind dog, Tramp, who I am waiting to collect at the emergency vet following surgery last night. He didn't deserve what happened. My wife & I didn't need more trauma. Don't mistreat dogs.

My 16-year-old dog has been really struggling with this heat, but I figured out a way to help comfort him. If your dogs or cats need cooling, fold a moistened towel & put it in the freezer for a bit, then drape it over your pet or have them lay on it. After his walk, he's very happy for the relief!

The U.S. state did not merely permit this accumulation. It deliberately seeded it, in the reasonable expectation that private capital could extend American imperial reach into new domains—commercial space, algorithmic warfare, global communications infrastructure—where direct state action was politically costly or technically constrained.
