Arell de Borge had only one heartbeat before light flooded the hallway, blinding him.
“The hell?” someone growled.
Should he first give in to the bile in his throat, or the black dots in his vision? Arell leaned back against the entry door, squeezing his eyes shut. He had known the door was there, just as he knew that to his right was a small rug with scuffed boots and to his left a small door leading to an even smaller closet. He knew this house as well as he knew the mansion he had grown up in.
“Care to explain?”
And he knew that voice.
Arell carefully blinked against the light, shadows and shapes transforming into furniture and bits and pieces. He knew everything by heart, as if he had stepped out mere hours ago and not seven years past.
“I’m waiting.” Tristan Lupin hadn’t changed in the last years, his form bulky, his face a bit too sharp, his dark hair the same untamable mess.

“I grasped for the sky, and it grasped for me. Riding under the blueness of the steppe was all I wanted to do, until I met Otar. For him, I diverged from my path, which disqualifies me as a leader, but you know what, Onder? I don’t regret it. I made my decision, and I made my peace with it. I know what will come when I follow him. I knew it the moment he said he would travel to the other city.
He is the sun and the sky and the moon. He is otar, and I’d be a fool to not hold onto him.”

Chapter 10 from "The Edge of a World" (Otar's Universe #1) by JD Rivers.

A witch light flared, and Otar relaxed his movements. How often had he seen that silhouette in the shine of a fire, broad and safe?
Andres unclipped his sword and stripped layer for layer out of his armor.
He turned and stopped when he found Otar watching him.
“Don’t stop now,” he drawled sleepily, falling easily into the old banter they had once shared. That Andres had returned did something to Otar’s insides that he was unwilling to name.
Andres chuckled and crept closer, stripped down to a thin shirt and close-fitting pants. He perched on the edge of the bed and Otar wanted nothing more than to curl around him. Maybe this was how a moth felt near a flame.
A hand settled in Otar’s hair; fingers carded through the long curls. As it always did with Andres, the monster uncurled lazily and took a small delicate bite. Every contact with Andres sparked a brief exchange of life force, not only when they slept together. With Andres, the monster was docile, never going out of control.
“Allow me to sleep next to you.” Andres’ voice was low, hesitant of his welcome. Otar reacted without thinking. He scooted so far back that he almost fell out on the other side. Then he held the blanket up in case Andres had missed the point.
With that soft, dimpling smile, he slipped in.
The witch light threw harsh shadows over Andres, deepening tattoo lines and scars. They faced each other, eyes darting back and forth between them.
“Hey,” Andres whispered, while the light flickered out, the charge empty.
“Hey,” Otar whispered. He wanted to add more, but Andres ghosted his hand over Otar’s cheek, settling it at the base of his skull, scratching soft lazy circles. A gesture they both knew would put Otar to sleep.
He glowered at Andres, but the other just watched him, a soft soothing expression in his eyes, barely perceptible in the darkness. Otar fought against the sleep, but to no avail.
“Sleep, ana.”
And Otar slept.
