I have felt very guilty for decades because I find Thomas Hardy so dark as to be unreadable. At one stroke Mr Coe has washed that guilt away with his discerning wit and fine writer’s literary judgement. 🙄

I think it is essential to just say "Join'. That's the objective. Keep it simple. Many of the current population have never been members of the EU, as adults certainly.

That people sometimes don't see things for themselves is why they need leading. Opening minds to possibility, and to being prepared to be persuaded, is part of the leader role.

Sometimes humans have to do things that are 'wrong', for the greater good. It matters that the decision is made by a human, and the moral weight is carried by a human, and remains with that human. Without the concept of a human with 'dirty hands' to help justify hard decisions, there are no limits.

A civilised society has a problem when so many people are convinced that they have had enough education and just stop trying to think, with an open mind, and with a willingness to learn how to think better. This immature arrogance is fertile ground for demagogues and charlatans.

Trade Unions have a total number of members that can be the divisor on their collective political contributions to provide an 'each individual' contribution to be assessed against any individual cap.

My response precisely. We must not let their money get inside our heads. Although it must now be tempting for NF to take all the money and run, which would be glorious.

Given it is being spent in the country they won't pay taxes in it could be seen as a win for the economy.

The value of any property depends on the context it exists in: this is one of the big risks in thinking 'ownership' of anything preserves its value against all changes in context. The flaw in 'gated communities' strategies, inter alia. Potholes and Porsches also.

When someone breaks your heart When someone breaks your heart, And someone will, Remember just to cry. It truly only happens once. And will protect you If you let it go. First breathe, reflect, then, sadly, Put away the hurt, And, don’t forget your smile.

It's also a free choice who we make friends with. This was interesting to read from a British point of view. It is quite hard to fathom how anyone could defend the morality or efficacy of many of the President's policy choices, let alone his actions against the spirit of the Constitution.

Fair enough, but. When does technology have a meaning independent of its relationship to use? Even if that use is just an intention or possibility pre-deployment?

David Foster @jckspk.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
technology, when deployed, is a particular manifestation of social relations. So yes.

Yes, but: deterrence. Which is one big reason why the US wasting so much of its strategic reserve of guided weapons on Iran is such a problem. History shows that stopping an 'Arms Race' once it has started takes enormous effort, or a very destructive war.

When staying in Lublin I walked out to Majdanek and spent a morning walking the ground. There were only a handful of visitors. Moving, but also shocking how close it was to the city, and how visible from the road. To stand there was essential to a better understanding of all the written words.

Some citizens can pass down their citizenship to their children, some cannot: from .gov.uk "... might automatically become a citizen if you’re born outside the UK to a British parent. But your children will not automatically be citizens if they’re born outside the UK." A case of two categories.

Source please. I don't think it is the case in current law that there are 'only citizens'.

I think we could do with a bit more clarity on what different forms of published writing are, and their purpose(s). Academic papers are not the same thing as reports produced as part of an institution's business. In each case authorship bears a different set of responsibilities, as do contributors.
