I was moderately hoping he was doing the right thing, but a week after this video went live he laid off about a hundred of his employees, citing AI and profit incentives as the primary drivers. He may be one of the less bad ones but he's still a San Francisco based tech CEO submerged in AI culture.

Genuinely concerned about the engineers at YouTube who work on the "Show me fewer shorts" button feature. Are they OK? Has anyone fed or watered them in a while? Did they get enough sleep? I'm really rooting for them but I'm losing hope. 😭

Some research today into how to illustrate the books for Marsozoic. Trying my hand at sketching + watercolor. I'm absolutely over the moon with the in-game result!!
A photo of my desk, covered with newspaper, with watercolor supplies on it - a palette with various mixed colors, some dirty paint water, a brush. On the left, a scrap of paper covered with dabs of watercolor, to test out the hues. In the middle, a WIP watercolored sketch of a frog, nearly finished.Scanned version of the finished watercolored sketch of a frog. It's hopping to the right, leaving a faint shadow on the ground. The frog is colored with a soft mix of green, orange-y and brown watercolors, with some black spots and white highlights.A screenshot of my paleontology game, Marsozoic, with the frog sketch integrated into an in-game book. The screen is split between a workspace on the left that is strewn about with alien fossils, and a table on the right with an open book. The book contains information about animals moving through a series of hops. The frog sketch now illustrates the bottom of the page.

one thing you learn from making a lot of things is that the nitty gritty details, the millions of tiny invisible decisions, ARE the art. The "higher level ideas" are not nearly as important or interesting

Last time I couldn't figure out how to properly visualize something using tools, I ended up doing all the (log) positioning calculations in a spreadsheet and drew them in Inkscape with 4 decimal exact positioning 😂 Sometimes doing it by hand is the least overwhelming option 🤷

I love finding new artists through artist collaborations. It's like finding out your friends are friends with pretty cool people at a mutual hangout and you become friends as well

I woke up, and want to clarify: Note that none of my arguments were - AI output is ugly/I can always tell - AI can't do my job well - AI looks different from human output These are not sustainable arguments. As AI evolves they will likely erode. That's why I wrote a huge list of DURABLE arguments:

This thread was written out of pure frustration with the state of the industry, at 4am. I might have gotten things wrong but I'm pretty confident I can back all of these up with sources if pressed.

Above all: YOU CAN DO WITHOUT You do not need to participate. You're not falling behind. It's manufactured FOMO to get you addicted to the products. Your brain will thank you, and you'll be doing a good thing for society, culture, the environment and most likely; your career.

Product: - AI products are extremely interchangeable; AI product selecting will be almost exclusively done by price point. Leads to a race to the bottom, or alternatively rely on (illegal) industry price fixing. - Local models also have many of the above problems, but are generally cheaper.
1142
Jochem Kuijpers 🎃 @jchmoe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
- Data centers are built where land is cheap and permits are easy to get, which are often areas vulnerable to exploitation, pollution and disruption of nature (ground water level, for example) - The last thing we need right now is an arms race to build power-hungry data centers
1173
Jochem Kuijpers 🎃 @jchmoe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Environmental: - AI requires some of the most power-hungry chips, much more so than most other applications - The mining and production for hardware heavily pollutes, disproportionately affects the global south - High-end servers are not built to last more than a few years before they are scrapped
1153
Jochem Kuijpers 🎃 @jchmoe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
- AI coders report 'atrophy' of their own programming skills - A significant portion of code on the internet by now is AI generated. Given that most AI code sucks and makes common errors, AI models are likely to repeat these errors unless explicitly prompted not to ("model collapse")
1173
Jochem Kuijpers 🎃 @jchmoe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
- AI tools lead to less stable architecture/interfaces, which increases risk of instability/regressions/bugs - AI reduces the cost of low-impact tasks, increasing productivity metrics while lowering overall impact - AI coders are extremely replaceable, which I imagine will affect career prospects
1152
Jochem Kuijpers 🎃 @jchmoe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Programming-specific: - AI products have destroyed the chain of mentorship in companies and open-source projects - AI tools externalize responsibility for code quality: "the model messed up" etc. - Automated code reviews devalue human understanding of the code
2184
Jochem Kuijpers 🎃 @jchmoe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Political reasons: - Allocating scarce resources to benefit the few is unethical and unsustainable - AI infrastructure disproportionately hurts marginalized communities while benefiting the wealthy - AI companies concentrate information, wealth and power
1153
Jochem Kuijpers 🎃 @jchmoe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Creativity/skill: - Effort is part of the process; it leads to better and more meaningful results - Individual experience and expression induces variance in outcome and moves culture and tech forward - Discovery and execution leads to a better understanding than reading a AI's solution ever could
1152
Jochem Kuijpers 🎃 @jchmoe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Tech companies simply can't overcome these fundamental reasons NOT to use their AI products Ethics/society: - AI models are largely built on stolen labor - Cognitive health suffers with extended use of AI - AI destroys communities, careers and crafts that drive our culture and society for profit

The Full Version of DEVIL'S LIMINAL is now on Google Play! It also has a free demo, and the entire game is available with one purchase. (It's also cheaper than Steam, because that's the nature of mobile 🤷) When yuri is on a mobile game, you can have yuri anytime. play.google.com/store/apps/d...

optimist: the glass is half full pessimist: the glass is half empty backend engineer: we've set up a horizontal autoscaler, when the average glass utilization exceeds 50%, it'll add new glasses and redistribute the load. When the average utilization drops, we'll eliminate glasses to save on cost.

I'm very happy with Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO. They're open-backed over-ear, so they bleed through environment sound, and your headphones will be a bit audible to your surroundings, but the comfort is great. Allows me to wear them all day with glasses, without getting annoyed. Great audio quality. 🙂
