Juliane Fürst @jcaf.bsky.social · 03/08/2026Merkel‘s actions or inactions, which proved fatal for what she wanted to achieve, have to be seen in the context of Germany’s own history of war, defeat and guilt. They created a complex psychological climate, especially in Merkel’s generation, in which negotiations and compromise became a fetish. 010
Juliane Fürst @jcaf.bsky.social · 03/08/2026Merkel was not referring to war with Germany nor was her sole motive oil and gas, even though it allowed her to pull out of nuclear energy. Merkel, like many Germans, has been socialised to make peace paramount to everything else, which blinded her to see the point of no return. 110

Juliane Fürst @jcaf.bsky.social · 26/04/2026The Soviet Union collapsed under an emotional overload of pain and disillusionment, but also hope for something better. The catastrophe of Chornobyl was a major catalyst in setting this process in motion. 0151

Chornobyl was also instrumental in creating an independent local press, whose founding ethos was the revelation of hidden truths. Juliane Fürst @jcaf.bsky.social · 26/04/2026The callousness of officials far away in Moscow, who valued silence over swift evacuation and calls for international help strengthened the sense of Soviet citizens that they did not matter in the system.
