Thinking about raking up some leaves this weekend? Read this first.
theconversation.com
Why fall yard care could start with doing less – but not nothing
Fallen leaves provide essential winter habitat for native pollinators and provide natural mulch for the soil. If you have to clear some leaves, don’t get rid of them entirely: Move them out of sight.

Bees still need food in the fall. Wild asters bloom prolifically and support pollinators when most flowering plants are going to seed. Symphyotrichum racemosum, small white aster; Bombus impatiens, eastern bumblee #NativePlants #gardening #jardin #garten #garden #bloomscrolling

#gardening So it’s this week plants are showing stress from the Nor’easter 8-10 days ago. A lot of pepper and leaf drop. In other news, I ordered 16 new varieties of pepper for next year. Someone needs to save me from myself. 😭🤣
A circular woven basket contains a vibrant array of colorful fruits and vegetables, including Nippon orangequat, okra, various peppers, and acerola cherry, goji, tiny tomatoes, yellow tomatoes, miracle berry and some raspberries and very dark string beans. The basket is placed on grass.

No. Actually I think it’s weird of me to keep looking up audiobook narrators and just wondering if other people do it too. 😊

jblue @jbluemusic.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Same for me for the actual characters in fiction. It’s just when listening to audiobooks, I seem to need to see the real face to the voice.

jblue @jbluemusic.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
It’s funny bc I don’t have the same urge to look up the actual authors. You too?

Cooked fresh SP leaf has a cucumber spinach flavor. Dried it tastes a bit like grilled zucchini and is kinda tea-ish. Fresh muscadines taste similar to domesticated grape leaves. Dried they’re herbal/tangy. All the above plants are productive, heat resilient, drought tolerant and pest resistant.

Leaves are crumbled to save space and mason jars. Dried leaves can be used in soups, curries, dough flour, pasta, sauces, etc.

1st pic is before harvest and 2nd is after. I only collected around a 1/6th of the leaves, just the nicest ones. Next and last SP leaf round is beginning November.
Before pic of sweet potato vines in a raised bed. It’s totally swamped. A wall of green leaves. After pic of harvesting 4 large basket full of leaves. It looks like I hardly made a dent.

jblue @jbluemusic.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I wash the leaves in brine water before dehydrating. They sit in the brine for 10’ or so before being swished and squished for a few minutes then rinsed with fresh water. This makes the leavas a little salty and savory. It also kills any bugs.

jblue @jbluemusic.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
My oven will only accommodate a few trays at a time so I can only collect enough in a day that will fit. It takes around 12h to dry SP leaves at 140F.

Climate change #gardening Leaf harvest 🧵: sweet potato leaves, papalo and muscadines. This is the last harvest for muscadines before they start to turn yellow. This is the first round for SP and the papalo got pulled bc the plants broke off from the base in the Nor’easter.

12/ Without adding any raised bed soil at all, the only things (in my experience) that will grow just in the mulch are Romano pole beans if you plant them 6-8”/17cm deep in the spring or sweet potatoes. They still need to be fertilized.

11/ then after the plant has sprouted and formed true leaves, dig a space 2-3 as large as the seed starting pot and fill with raised bed soil and plant the seedling and cover with a thin layer of mulch.

jblue @jbluemusic.bsky.social · 19/04/2026
10/ The raised bed will be ready to plant directly into next year. If you want to plant in the bed this year, you will need to start the plants as seeds in seed starting pots…

jblue @jbluemusic.bsky.social · 19/04/2026
9/ Don’t forget the leftover water from washing rice and lentils makes great fertilizer. You can even grind up raw lentils to a powder, mix with water and fertilize you plants that way.

8/ Bokashi composting allows to you use alternative types of waste that are not typical “greens” but you have to buy bokashi bran. www.almanac.com/bokashi-comp... Another fert method is to add weeds, trimmings and other greens to water in a sealed bucket set in the sun for 6 weeks to ferment.

7/ Fencing is the biggest expense. After building most of the raised bed pile, it’ll be sloped at an angle. Hammer down fence posts at the bottom of the slope, wrap the fencing around and then fill in the rest of the area up to the fence so that baby bunnies don’t crawl under any loose spaces.
173
jblue @jbluemusic.bsky.social · 19/04/2026
6/ The pile should be over 2 1/2ft / 76cm tall at least. It is going to shrink down significantly. If you are expecting to plant this year, you need to fence the entire raised area or animals will raid your plants.
163
jblue @jbluemusic.bsky.social · 19/04/2026
5/ To build a giant raised garden bed, first shave the lawn as close as possible to the ground and lay down cardboard (make sure there is no tape/plastic) or layers of newspaper. Then start piling the greens and browns on top stomping down as you go to make it compact.
183
jblue @jbluemusic.bsky.social · 19/04/2026
4/ And of course save all your trimmings, tea and coffee grounds to mix in the pile. More info here: www.almanac.com/how-to-make-...

3/ Composting (to put it simply) is a mix of around 1/3 “greens” and 2/3 “browns.” The woodchips are “browns” so to develop soil, you need to mix in as much greens as you can find. See if local cafes, restaurants, juice bars, grocery stores, distilleries (mash) will offer you free “green”waste.
