Today is #CancerCachexiaAwarenessDay. Cancer cachexia is involuntary weight loss that affects ~50% of people with cancer. It can be life-threatening, yet far too few people have heard of it. 🧡 Learn the word. 💙 Recognize the signs. 🧡 Support patients & caregivers.

Functional liver genomics identifies hepatokines promoting wasting in cancer cachexia
Cancer-induced liver changes promote body wasting through secreted factors, with circadian regulators and hepatokines being important contributors to cancer cachexia.

Cancer-induced FOXP1 disrupts and reprograms skeletal-muscle circadian transcription in cachexia
Ducharme et al. investigate the impact and crosstalk between cancer and FoxP1 on the skeletal-muscle circadian transcriptome that mediates time-of-day-dependent biological functions. They reveal cancer/disease-specific functions of FoxP1 in the disruption and reprograming of the skeletal-muscle circadian transcriptome, which may contribute to cancer-induced muscle loss.

Cancer induced FoxP1 expression in muscle reprograms muscle clock output. Why does this matter? By co-opting normal clock output, FoxP1 is disrupting homeostatic pathways important for muscle health. We posit that this clock disruption could be a factor contributing to cachectic outcomes.

Ablation of satellite cell‐specific clock gene, Bmal1, alters force production, muscle damage, and repair following contractile‐induced injury
Ablation of SC-Bmal1 lowered force production and altered the magnitude of muscle damage/repair and SC myogenic progression following eccentric contractile injury.
