Shoutout to our EDL student Ben Sheridan, Principal at the Elementary School in Kinshasa, who wrote this lovely reflection on Connection, Caring, and Belonging in the @whatschoolcouldbe.bsky.social Chronicle. www.whatschoolcouldbe.org/blog/connect...

The Learning Force
Is it as important as the Workforce in a constantly changing world? Do kids know how to "Learn-a-Living"?

Talking to AI is shockingly like writing PhD qualifying exam questions. Like, exactly the same to get great in-depth answers.

There you go ... a bunch of simple stuff could make a pretty big difference. I like those kinds of changes ... and this space just feels Ripe to me for a bunch of simple changes as the Drill and Kill fades.

Love the creativity! Had a Grad. student lately make a strong case for Play (which we know has many benefits) ... and just thinking a couple simple changes might go a long way. The 20 min. recess feels more like something we do mostly because we've always done it that way. Wondering who likes it.

KY elementary kids get something like 20 minutes of recess. We also rank high in childhood obesity. Is the time spent on reading/math or the time spent exercising better for the learner's overall wellness and development at that age? Not saying I have the answer, just seriously wondering? Thoughts?

Pedro Noguera led the panel and pulled together some local deeper learning leaders who spoke to how their schools were having success across a variety of domains. But, certainly put the challenge to #UCEA to get into that work and help them.

Love that @spweston.bsky.social! Place to start in my mind is CTE. We have like 4 systems that mostly do the same job. I know that's liked to disconnected funding sources, but I find the whole thing impenetrably complex. Let alone how a kid or even a guidance counselor could navigate it.

Yep, similar to SEEK with a minimum foundation and then a formula beyond ... and for me, I'd really like to see that formula linked to the extent feasible to the Science of Learning and Development components on the things we know work for kids to grow. Anyway, a wonder lately.

Justin Bathon @jbathon.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
One thing we could benefit a lot from is public system integration. Agree on your point private systems struggle to match this, but working in dual credit really shows how disconnected public K12 and public higher ed are. Largely not on the same page on many fronts.

Justin Bathon @jbathon.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
I think about this particularly for Jefferson where it is harder and harder to move the kids, so it would at least help to move the dollars.

Justin Bathon @jbathon.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
Adore it ... teachers thriving as professionals gets a lot of my thinking as well (especially where policymakers do less and teachers do more). A system doesn't really work without empowered and engaged people (or, without people generally).

Justin Bathon @jbathon.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
Sometime I'd like to pick your brain about within district Adequacy models. I'm far from a finance expert, and maybe this would only apply to a few districts, but I wonder about internal district fund distribution models reflecting the spirit and formula employed at a state level? Seen that?

When people come to the music, I tend to embrace it. The #DurableSkills have been a great complement to our #DeeperLearning work in KY. As the federal role wanes, it doesn't hurt if local legislators feel permission to embrace ideas like PBL. So, this could be a good thing @karennole678.bsky.social

One of the things we have seen in Kentucky is how strong the public's connection is to educators ... and when educators ask the public to do things, at least in Kentucky, they tend to listen.
