It's been almost 6 years since I did this post.
Imagine you're one is the cicadas who went underground 17 years ago sheet playing F-Zero GX and spent the entire time wondering what amazing strides with series would have made by the time you came up in 2021.

Trust is important in every industry, but theirs is one where it's the whole damn ballgame, and my trust has been violated to an extent where even if they go back, I can't.

I don't have a ton of tweets screenshotted and bookmarked, but this one touched my very core.
A screenshot of a tweet by Dr. William Lopez:
the vast majority of the time the intersection of my interests gave no public utility. but every one in a whole, five people laugh, and I count it as a victory.

Finally got to play a game of Spirit Island with my custom island boards with legible thematic sides. It's definitely a game; it resolved to a victory condition. No one could argue otherwise.
The end of a game of Spirit Island. The boards are on the thematic side, but with the art style of the balanced side. There are a lot of explorers everywhere because the invaders were Russia.

I probably would have gone with this if I hadn't just read Radiant Star. What are we even looking at in the original? Beats me, but it's cool as hell.
Covers for Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep. On the left, the old cover with a weird snakelike spaceship that doesn't make any sense but is still a cool spaceship. On the right, some black bubbles for some reason.

What are these little fighter guys? Do they even have starfighters in the Radch? I don't know, but it's still a way better cover than the new one.
Covers for Ann Leckie's Ancillary Justice. On the left, the original cover with a cool spaceship illustration of what looks like a top down view of two starfighters flying past a larger ship orbiting a moon or something. On the right, the more recent cover, a big red field with some abstract arches that are maybe the exhaust of a little triangular rocket ship.

Always happy when Eli Lilly is in the headlines and I remember The Last Good Tweet.

You don't have to literally turn the text over, you probably learn to read upside down when that's the system. It makes a certain kind of sense. You're writing, you hit the end of the line, and you start the next line where your hand already is, but now you go the other way.

Only if we're not counting George Washington as a founder, who had foreseen Donald Trump's Republican party by his farewell address.
The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries which result gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of public liberty.

Without looking forward to an extremity of this kind (which nevertheless ought not to be entirely out of sight), the common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of party are sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it.

It serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which finds a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another.

So this gas station isn't open yet, and I guess they decided they would just turn the sign on with a ridiculous price so that nobody would try to stop for gas. I'm not sure this strategy is going to work much longer.

THERE were two “Reigns of Terror,” if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors” of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror—that unspeakably bitter and awful Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves.
