Annie Leibovitz was born #OTD in 1949. + Rolling Stone’s chief photographer for 10 yrs w/142 covers + Living Legend designation, Library of Congress, for her original contributions to America's cultural heritage + 1st woman to have an exhibition at Washington's Nat'l Portrait Gallery #photography

A color photograph of the iconic American portrait photographer Annie Leibovitz (born October 2, 1949), celebrated for her era-defining celebrity portraits and her designation as a Library of Congress Living Legend. Facing forward, she maintains a serene, knowing expression with a slight, subtle smile, looking directly at the camera through rectangular, black-rimmed eyeglasses. Her long, silver-gray hair is loosely styled, swept slightly to one side. She is dressed in her signature utilitarian style, wearing a dark gray, long-sleeved button-down collared shirt with the sleeves relaxed and rolled up past her forearms. Her right hand rests confidently on her hip, while her left hand grips the top of a professional, medium-format Hasselblad film camera mounted securely on a tripod directly in front of her chest. The composition places her centrally within a weathered setting featuring textured, dark green wooden doors and a rough concrete wall to the right. In the upper left background, a large, circular studio light ring glows with a warm, ambient golden luminosity, functioning as a halo-like visual anchor that contrasts with the dark, moody environment. The overall atmosphere is intimate and authoritative, symbolizing a legendary artist standing alongside the essential tools of her historic craft.

🦇 30 days until Halloween... *Movie marquee and theatre display for Horror of Dracula (originally released as Dracula in the UK). Hammer Film Productions, 1958. 🎞

Horror of Dracula (1958)—originally released simply as Dracula in the United Kingdom—is a landmark British Gothic horror film directed by Terence Fisher. Produced by the legendary Hammer Film Productions, it is celebrated as the first vampire film ever shot in color (Technicolor/Eastmancolor). The movie catapulted Christopher Lee (as Count Dracula) and Peter Cushing (as Dr. Van Helsing) into global horror icons, redefining the vampire mythos with an unprecedented blend of vibrant color, visceral gore, and underlying sensuality.

Letitia Chitty (d. #OTD in 1982) was a pioneering British structural engineer & mathematician. A master of stress analysis, she spent her career mathematically determining the "breaking points" of complex structures, ranging from #WWI combat aircraft to major international dams. #WomenInSTEM

A monochromatic sepia-toned photograph of British structural engineer and mathematician Letitia Chitty (July 15, 1897 – September 29, 1982), a premier pioneer of 20th-century stress analysis. Positioned in a front-facing, head-and-shoulders composition, she looks directly at the camera with a sober, neutral expression and tight lips. Her dark hair is parted neatly down the center and pulled back into a simple bun. She is dressed in a dark blazer or coat layered over a high-collared, patterned blouse or knit sweater visible at the neckline. The background consists of soft, textured drapery in warm, out-of-focus sepia tones. The tight framing captures her sharp, determined demeanor, evoking a serious and intellectually focused mood. The vintage composition highlights her immense historical significance as the first woman to graduate with first-class honors in Cambridge’s Mechanical Sciences Tripos.

31 days until Halloween... *Son of Frankenstein (1939).

Boris Karloff wore the bulky fur/sheepskin vest as the Monster in Son of Frankenstein (1939).
• The Movie: Son of Frankenstein is the third film in Universal's classic series, starring Basil Rathbone and Bela Lugosi as Ygor.
• The Costume: Karloff’s Monster swaps his iconic dark suit jacket from the first two films for a rugged, heavy fur-trimmed or sheepskin vest over a shirt.
• The Reason: Wardrobe designers used the bulky layered vest partly to give the Monster a more massive, intimidating silhouette and to help disguise that Karloff had filled out a bit since playing the role in 1931 and 1935.
